Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and TVK president C Joseph Vijay took a different route during his election campaign in Dharapuram on Sunday, riding a bullock cart for a short distance as he appealed to voters ahead of the assembly bypoll.
Vijay was campaigning in support of TVK candidate P Sathyabama when he stopped to interact with people along the route. Supporters gathered around the roadshow and presented him with photo frames, flowers, garlands, gifts and party towels.
Vijay reaches Dharapuram for campaign
According to TVK sources cited by PTI, Vijay travelled to Dharapuram by helicopter and was received by senior party leaders and ministers, including general secretary and Rural Development and Water Resources Minister N Anand and Revenue and Disaster Management Minister K A Sengottaiyan.
The campaign began at around 1 pm. The roadshow was planned to cover more than 20 public-contact points across the Dharapuram area.
This was Vijay’s second campaign visit to the constituency. He had earlier addressed a rally there on September 30.
Dharapuram, Madurantakam bypolls on October 6
The Dharapuram and Madurantakam assembly constituencies are scheduled to go to the polls on October 6. Votes will be counted on October 9.
With the bypoll approaching, Vijay has stepped up campaigning for his party candidate Sathyabama in Dharapuram.
Vijay targets DMK over remarks on women
During his address, Vijay also attacked the DMK over remarks he said were directed at women.
Referring to comments made by DMK president and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin about Sathyabama, Vijay said political opponents could criticise him but warned them against making remarks about women.
He said he had earlier told voters that supporting the DMK and certain other parties would amount to endorsing people who, according to him, make offensive remarks about women.
Vijay also criticised Stalin’s alleged remarks against Sathyabama, describing them as inappropriate and saying that he would not remain silent if women were targeted.
“Speak whatever you want about me. I will take it. But if you dare speak against our sister, or against the mothers, sisters, and daughters of our households, I will not stay quiet,” Vijay said during the campaign.
He invoked the legacy of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M G Ramachandran, saying the state was witnessing a return to the “era of MGR”.
