A 25-year-old dual UK-Iranian national has been arrested in London on suspicion of preparing terrorist acts as British police investigate a mysterious incident at RAF Fairford, a military base used by the US in operations against Iran.

The arrest is the sixth in connection with the incident, which triggered a major police response and the evacuation of a nearby village in western England.

Counter Terrorism Policing said the man was arrested in Westminster on Thursday. Police said the investigation remained “hugely complex” and that they were examining “all possible angles”, including possible foreign state involvement.

Five men arrested near airbase

Police were called to RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire early Sunday after a local farmer reported seeing several masked men and vans blocking a road near the base.

Five London-based men, all in their 20s, were arrested at the scene on suspicion of terrorism and explosives offences. They were later released on police bail without charge.

Police said no improvised explosive device was found, although petrol was reportedly discovered in the vans.

The nature of the suspected threat has not been publicly explained. British media have also reported that one of the original suspects contacted emergency services, although police have not commented on that report.

Iran denies involvement

On Wednesday, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham had said there were “strong indications” that Iran may have played a role in the incident.

Iran has rejected the allegations as “baseless”. Tehran also summoned the British ambassador over the issue and accused Britain of allowing its military facilities to be used in what it described as US-Israeli aggression against Iran.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel had warned Britain about an alleged Iranian-sponsored attack.

“We gave the Brits the intel that there was going to be an attack, and it’s an Iranian-sponsored attack,” Netanyahu told Fox News.
