The plan was that if the hijackers made any demands in exchange for the release of the passengers, this special unit would take charge to negotiate with them and carry out the safe evacuation of the hostages. If the plane had fallen in another country, Israel would have sent commandos. Israel had also prepared for a situation in which the hijacked plane would crash in the territory of Jordan or Saudi Arabia instead. In such a situation, a plan was made to send Shaldag, a special commando unit of the Israeli Air Force, to rescue the passengers and crew trapped in the plane. The same unit took part in the rescue operation of two American aircrew members after the crash of an American F-15E Strike Eagle aircraft in Iran in April.
