LPU Registrar addressed rape rumours as three hostel students denied that any such incident took place. Police have formed an SIT to probe the allegations.

Lovely Professional University Registrar Dr Monica Gulati has released a video addressing students amid the controversy surrounding allegations of a rape on the university campus and the violent protests that followed in the early hours of Sunday.
In a separate video released by the university, three students staying in Room No. 504 of Girls’ Hostel 3 (GH-3) said that no incident resembling rape, as alleged in messages circulating on social media, had taken place in their room.
The students also appealed to police and fellow students to stop repeatedly disturbing them in the name of an investigation. They said they would inform their parents if such an incident were to occur and reiterated that no such incident had taken place in their room.
The videos were released after unverified claims about the alleged rape of a female student triggered protests at the Phagwara-based university. The protests escalated into vandalism on campus, with students also blocking the Jalandhar-Phagwara National Highway.
LPU Calls Claims ‘False, Baseless And Fabricated’
In her message, Registrar Monica Gulati said attempts were being made to damage the university’s reputation through what the administration described as fabricated rumours and false stories.
The university attributed the circulation of the claims to what it described as the vested interests of certain individuals and anti-social elements. It appealed to students, parents and the public not to believe, circulate or amplify unverified information and instead rely on official communication from the university.
The latest clarification comes as police continue to look into the allegations and the circumstances that led to the student unrest.
Police Form SIT To Probe Allegations
Earlier, Jalandhar Range DIG Naveen Singla said a Special Investigation Team had been formed to investigate the matter. The team includes police officials as well as student representatives, with the probe expected to examine available forensic, CCTV and phone evidence.
Police had initially said that the rape claim circulating among students was unverified. Kapurthala SSP Gaurav Toora said students had gathered after a viral message about an alleged rape incident and that police had not found substantiating evidence at that stage.
The police subsequently said an FIR was being registered based on the students’ statement, while stressing that the allegations would be investigated.
Protest Escalated Into Campus Vandalism
The controversy had triggered a large student gathering near the girls’ hostel around the early hours of Sunday. The protest later escalated, with reports of damaged window panes, campus property and other structures, while some objects were also set on fire. Students subsequently blocked the Jalandhar-Phagwara highway, disrupting traffic on the busy route.
Heavy police deployment was made at the campus as authorities attempted to bring the situation under control.
The incident came a day after a separate student protest at Chitkara University in Punjab’s Rajpura. Punjab Police has launched a probe into the unrest at both campuses, while officials said the two incidents were being examined separately.
For now, the rape allegation remains under investigation, while LPU has categorically denied the claims circulating on social media. The university’s latest video featuring the three students from Room 504 is its latest attempt to counter the allegations and clarify what it says happened inside the hostel.
