Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian, who is in New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), said Saturday that Tehran no longer trusts the United States after previous talks were followed by attacks and sanctions alongside a series of actions, according to an Al Jazeera report.
Referring to US President Donald Trump’s speech at UNGA, Pezeshkian said he threatened to wipe Iran “off the map”, while also labelling Iranians “terrorists”.
“The day after the US President’s speech, it was our turn to speak. In effect, he threatened to wipe Iran off the mapand, as a result, labelled us ‘terrorists'”, the Iranian President told Al Jazeera.
He said despite four or five rounds of talksWashington has continued to attack Iran, impose sanctions, and take stringent actions.
“This is the fourth or fifth time we’ve held talks. What has happened, and continues to happen, is that we no longer trust these talks. No matter how much we negotiate, after a while, they start attacking us, imposing sanctions, and taking the kind of actions they have taken before”, Pezeshkian said.
The Iranian leader said Tehran has tabled a peace proposal to Washington through Qatari mediators, adding a response from the American side is awaited.
“At least, we have reached an understanding on a framework and announced it. Now, the Americans have to respond. Are they willing to move forward within this framework, or do they want to derail the process again”? he said.
Trump Turns Down Iran’s Proposal
US President Donald Trump said Saturday that he had rejected a peace proposal from Iran, which was forwarded through Qatari mediators.
Speaking to reporters, Trump claimed Iran was “dying” because it has “no money coming in” due to Washington’s naval blockade of Iranian ports.
“And what they want to do is immediately open the Hormuz Strait. You know why? Because they’re dying. You know why they’re dying? Because they have no money coming in, because they get their money from the Hormuz Strait. So they outsmarted themselves”, he said.

Trump said the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz created a problem for the world, adding the US military targeted Iran’s economy by putting “the greatest blockade ever” on the country’s ports.
“They said, ‘Let’s close it and cause a problem for the world.’ And then I came along, and we put up the greatest blockade ever in military history. It’s a wall of steel, and we put it up, and guess what? They don’t have any money now, because they wanted to close the strait and I said, ‘That’s fine. We’re going to close it on you, but everybody else is able to use it.'”
