Early Monsoon Withdrawal

The southwest monsoon withdrew from Delhi on September 23, two days ahead of its normal date and marking the earliest retreat from the capital since 2002. Despite the early withdrawal, weather officials said the remaining systems could continue to bring scattered showers and thunderstorms over the next few days.

Safdarjung, Delhi’s base observatory, recorded 728.6mm of rainfall during the monsoon season, around 16% above its long-period average of 629.7mm.

Cloudy skies and moist easterly winds helped keep temperatures lower on Friday. The maximum temperature settled at 33°C, one degree below normal, while the minimum was 24.2°C. The IMD has forecast a maximum of 32-34°C and a minimum of 22-23°C for Saturday.

Rain May Delay Smog Build-Up

The fresh spell could also provide temporary relief from deteriorating air quality as Delhi heads towards the winter pollution season. The city’s Air Quality Index stood at 78 on Friday, placing it in the satisfactory category.

Meteorologists, however, cautioned that the cooler conditions do not signal the arrival of winter. Temperatures are expected to rise again once the current weather system moves away.

Experts are also watching changing conditions in the Pacific, including a strengthening El Niño, for their possible influence on weather patterns. Lower soil moisture and increased dust could add to Delhi’s air pollution if rainfall remains limited in the coming weeks.
