United States President Donald Trump, amid his ongoing crackdown on illegal immigrants across the country, on Wednesday expressed his concern about the growing number of immigrants in Canada.
The US president warned that immigrants to Canada have been “causing problems that will soon be too big to handle” and attributed it to a “Liberal takeover” which he predicted would “end very badly.”
Taking to Truth Social, Trump wrote, “Canada is destroying itself by allowing millions and millions of people into the Country, essentially unchecked and unvetted, and who are causing problems that will soon be too big to handle. It is a Liberal takeover that will end very badly. Already showing up in their numbers. Big unemployment. ‘Oh Canada!”
The post came hours after Trump claimed that the United Nations has been ceaselessly promoting mass migration, which has led to the destruction of Western cultural heritage.
In terms of immigrants per capita, Canada has been admitting more immigrants than the US, with Indians accounting for a significant share of the inflows. Indians rank first among legal immigrants entering Canada and second in the US.
The Arithmetic Of Immigrants Flowing Into Canada
In the wake of Trump’s allegations, if we look at the arithmetic of the immigrants who are being admitted to Canada, it does not draw the exact picture that the US president projects.

It should be noted that Canada is a country that shares a land border only with the United States. As per the official data, nearly 483,640 permanent residents were admitted by Canada in 2024.
However, since then, Ottawa has been cutting down the numbers. The government has also sketched its 2026–28 plan with the aim of bringing immigration back to its sustainable level.
Meanwhile, the United States has issued 1.4 million green cards in fiscal year 2024, which is three times Canada’s permanent-resident intake. In 2023, the number of green cards issued by the US stood at 1.17 million.
However, since Canada has a smaller population of roughly 42 million residents versus America’s 340 million-plus, the country’s 483,000 permanent residents represent about 1.16% of its population, in comparison to the US’ 0.4%.
US Vs Canada’s Immigration System
The immigration systems of both countries are very different, with the US immigration system being heavily family-based.
Among the 1.4 million people who received green cards in FY2024 in the US, 49% were immediate relatives of US citizens and the other 14% got green cards through family-preference categories. Meanwhile, only 13% of those green card holders were employer-sponsored or self-petitioned employment-based immigrants.
Meanwhile, in Canada, 58% of its permanent residents got entry through economic programs in 2024, in comparison to 22% through family reunification and 20% through refugee, humanitarian and other categories.
This data shows Canada has not thrown open its doors and is admitting immigrants through a well-designed system that caters to the economic and labour-market needs.
Also, as per the statistics, immigrants being admitted to Canada played a major role in filling engineering jobs.
Recent immigrants who arrived in Canada in 2018–19 were twice as likely as Canadian-born workers to be employed full-time as engineers. Around three-quarters of immigrant engineers who arrived during this period entered Canada through economic immigration programmes.
