Congress leader Rahul Gandhi launched a sharp attack on the Election Commission of India (ECI), accusing the poll body of being involved in what he called “vote chori” and alleging that it amounted to a direct attack on the Constitution.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Rahul Gandhi said, “Vote chori is a crime against the Indian people and a direct attack on our constitution. The BJP, RSS and EC who organised it have committed an act of treason. Justice will be served.”

His remarks came after a report by The Indian Express claimed that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had formally raised objections at least 14 times over 10 months to decisions and orders related to the electoral roll revision process. According to the report, the objections covered issues including the addition, deletion and restoration of voters, appeals against decisions in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process and the custody and security of electoral-roll data. The report also said the two commissioners had objected to changes made to Form 6, which is used by citizens to register as voters.

The report prompted several Opposition leaders to intensify their criticism of the Election Commission. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut, Congress leader Manish Tewari, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and DMK spokesperson Saravanan Annadurai were among those who questioned the functioning of the poll panel. Manish Tewari called for consideration of impeachment proceedings against the Chief Election Commissioner, while TMC MP Derek O’Brien also referred to an earlier Rajya Sabha motion seeking the removal of Gyanesh Kumar.

Akhilesh Yadav described the ECI as a “puppet” of those in power and alleged that the developments amounted to a conspiracy against democracy. The allegations come amid an ongoing political dispute over the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. Opposition parties have alleged that the exercise could result in eligible voters being excluded from electoral rolls, while the ECI has defended the process and rejected allegations of wrongdoing.
