Amazon will provide secure cloud computing service to NATO: This will not leak data, sharing information will be safe; It’s like a personal internet system

Amazon on Tuesday made its cloud service available to all 32 NATO member countries. The aim of this initiative is to facilitate easy sharing of sensitive government and defense documents among the member countries and to work together on military planning. This will not leak data and sharing information will be safe.

Amazon has already played a big role in the cloud computing systems of American intelligence agencies and the military. Secure cloud facilities are a primary requirement for intelligence analysis, military logistics and defense planning using modern technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The challenge of intelligence sharing will be resolved

Till now, there was a lot of difficulty in sharing intelligence information due to different security standards i.e. rules in NATO countries. However, now using an approved commercial cloud solution for all 32 countries will make it easier to quickly exchange information and plan together over time.

Under this new system, all the allied countries can share some confidential information of NATO among themselves. However, this will only be NATO restricted level information, which is NATO’s least secret or lowest-level information.

Top-secret data will not be shared at present

NATO’s major and confidential military operations are planned at the most secure level (‘Secret’ and ‘Top-Secret’). Internet or cloud services cannot be used immediately for such sensitive tasks because there is a risk of data theft.

However, Amazon says that now all 32 NATO member states have given the green light to its cloud services at the most basic security level. This means that in the coming time, it will become easier and safer for the armies of member countries to keep their more secret and sensitive information safely on the cloud.

What is NATO and its data security challenge?

North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO): It is a military alliance of 32 Western countries, which was established in 1949.

Problem of data sharing: All 32 countries have their own security and IT standards i.e. rules. The data system of any one country could not talk directly to the system of another country, due to which there was a delay in taking decisions in case of emergency.

Advantages of commercial cloud: By using tech companies like AWS, all countries will not have to create separate infrastructure and files can be shared securely on a single common platform.
