The fighting between Houthi rebels and Saudi Arabia has intensified in Yemen. Meanwhile, Britain has decided to provide help to Saudi.
Speaking to reporters on his way to New York on Monday, the British PM said Britain will provide tankers for air-to-air refueling. This means that Saudi fighter planes flying in the air can be refueled.
Here the war is affecting the common people. More than 3,000 Yemeni refugees have arrived in Djibouti in the past few days. According to the UN, more than 1.2 lakh Yemeni people have become homeless due to increasing fighting on the Red Sea coast.
Britain can send Voyager tanker aircraft
Britain may send a British Royal Air Force (RAF) Voyager tanker aircraft to help Saudi Arabia. This aircraft will operate from RAF Akrotiri airbase in Cyprus.
The job of the Voyager aircraft is to refuel the fighter planes flying in the air. With this, fighter planes can fly for longer periods without landing.
The British Air Force has 9 such Voyager aircraft. Of these, 8 are for military use and one aircraft is of normal i.e. civilian registration. If needed, he can also be used for military work.
This help being given to Saudi Arabia will be for a few weeks. Britain has already deployed Sky Saber air defense systems to Saudi Arabia this year. This system is used to protect against enemy air attacks like drones and missiles.
Britain’s Royal Air Force has a total of 9 Voyager aircraft.
Houthi offensive captures important islands near the Red Sea coast
Yemen’s Houthis have seized areas near the Bab al-Mandab Strait this month as they advanced toward the Red Sea coast.
This strait connects the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden and further to the Indian Ocean. Therefore, the fighting in this area may also affect the sea routes.
After this advance of Houthis, Saudi Arabia has carried out hundreds of air strikes in the coastal areas. The Houthis, on the other hand, have claimed hundreds of drone and missile attacks on Saudi Arabia’s cities and infrastructure.
Djibouti does not want to get involved in the war
Djibouti, located just opposite Yemen, has made it clear that it does not want to get involved in the war between the Houthis and the Saudi-backed Yemeni government.
However, Djibouti is one of the countries with the largest military presence in Africa. Since 2003, America has been running a big military base named Camp Lemonnier here. China also has a big military base here.
Why did Houthi attacks on Saudi increase?
The fighting is between Houthi rebels in Yemen and the Saudi Arabia-backed internationally recognized government of Yemen.
The Houthis have claimed to have carried out drone and ballistic missile attacks targeting Saudi Arabia’s capital Riyadh and energy-related facilities. In response, Saudi Arabia has attacked Houthi positions inside Yemen.
According to the British government, since July the Houthis have targeted several cities, airports, military bases and energy-related infrastructure in Saudi Arabia.
These include Abha, Jizan, Najran, Taif, Jeddah and Yanbu. Saudi ships have also been targeted in the Red Sea. Some civilians are said to have been injured in these attacks.
Britain has strongly condemned these attacks. It says this poses a threat to the stability of the region and the movement of ships through the Red Sea and the Bab-el-Mandab Strait.
War has been going on in Yemen since 2014
Civil war has been going on in Yemen since 2014. A UN-brokered ceasefire was reached between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis in 2022. But that agreement has broken down badly in recent months. After this, missiles, drones and air strikes between the two sides have increased again.
The impact of this war is not limited to just Yemen and Saudi Arabia. Due to the sea route passing through Bab-el-Mandab, the security here may also affect the international trade through the Red Sea.
But the biggest price of this fight is being paid by those people who have to leave their homes and take refuge in another country.
Britain has already attacked the Houthis
Britain has already taken military action against Houthi positions. In January 2024, Britain, along with the US, carried out air strikes on Houthi military bases in Yemen.
The operation followed a series of Houthi attacks on merchant shipping in the Red Sea. The operation involved British RAF Typhoon fighter planes being refueled in the air from Voyager tanker planes.
After this, in April 2025 also, Britain and America launched a joint military operation against the Houthis in Yemen. In this, British RAF Typhoon fighter planes targeted a drone manufacturing site of Houthis. In this operation also, Typhoon aircraft were refueled in the air from Voyager tankers.
Now Britain has again decided to provide Voyager tanker on the demand of Saudi Arabia. This help will be for a few weeks at present.
