IIT Bombay Suicide Prevention: To curb the frequent incidents of suicide by students, the IIT Bombay administration has started a unique change in the hostels. To prevent incidents of hanging from fans, ceiling fans are being removed from hostel rooms and replaced with wall fans (Wall Mounted Fans) are being installed.
According to sources, this step was under consideration for the last two months, which has been finalized recently. The first batch of wall-mounted fans to be installed in the hostel has also reached the campus.
Let us tell you that changing the fans is also a part of the same strategy regarding the safety measures that the IIT Bombay administration had assured the students in the month of July. This step has come at a time when there is a huge uproar and controversy going on in the institute’s campus over the incident of suicide by hanging of 20-year-old B.Tech second year student Sahil Wakode.
In view of the cases of suicide of students in higher educational institutions, this step of changing the fans has attracted everyone’s attention. Even before this, such changes have been made in some other campuses of the country with the aim of curbing the methods of suicide.
Administration’s side: No connection with suicide
However, IIT Bombay officials clarified on this matter and said that renovation work was already scheduled in the hostels and changing the fans is a part of that broader process. According to officials, the decision to replace the fans was taken by the administration long ago and has no direct connection with the recent incidents of suicides.
‘The failure of the system will not be hidden’
Political reactions have also started emerging on this step. NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) spokesperson Anish Gawane taunted while questioning this decision. He said that it is absurd to think that replacing a ceiling fan will fix a completely worn out and broken system!
