Quimcy Dsouza fell to Indonesia’s Sumaya in the Asian Games teqball semi-finals but remains in contention for a historic medal.

Star Indian teqball player Quimcy Dsouza couldn’t stop a spirited Sumaya as she fell to the Indonesian athlete in the semifinals of the women’s singles discipline on Saturday, September 19.
Quimcy went down 1-2 in the three-set semi-final, losing 12-7, 9-12, 7-12. She made a strong start, winning the opening set 12-7, but couldn’t maintain her momentum as Sumaya fought back to seal the next two sets.
Quimcy will now face Lebanon’s Dandal Kamar in the bronze-medal match.
Sumaya, however, staged a strong comeback in the second set, winning 12-9 to force the semi-final into a decider. Quimcy showed great composure early in the third set, racing to a 3-0 lead, but Sumaya fought back once again to win 12-7 and book her place in the final.
Quimcy started her Asian Games campaign with a brilliant upset of Japan’s world No. 7 Yuina Sakamoto before beating Cambodia’s Koemyean Dy 2-0 in just 24 minutes.
The Asian Games are yet to officially get underway, with the opening ceremony scheduled for later in the day. Manu Bhaker and Pawan Sehrawat will lead India’s contingent as flag-bearers at the ceremony.
Shot-putter Tajinderpal Singh Toor was replaced after he didn’t receive his official kit in time, with Sehrawat stepping in for him.
Mumbai-based Quimcy, who works as a test engineer, also played football at the Under-19 level. She first came into the limelight as a distance runner at the age of 13.
Quimcy has been a football enthusiast since childhood and pursued the sport, representing Maharashtra at the age-group level. Although her football career didn’t progress further, her love for the game led her to take up teqball.
After completing her degree in Sports Management, Quimcy joined sports goods retailer Decathlon. She was introduced to teqball after watching Brazilian football legend Ronaldinho play the sport in Instagram videos.
Soon after, Quimcy became the first Indian woman to represent the nation in teqball at the international level. She also founded the Teqball Club of Bengaluru to promote the sport at the grassroots level.
