Marathi film ‘Gondhal’ has been selected as India’s official entry for the 99th Academy Awards (Oscars 2027). Film Federation of India (FFI) made this official announcement on Friday.
It is a thriller film, which will represent the country in the ‘Best International Feature Film’ category at the Oscar ceremony. This time a total of 33 films were included from India in the Oscar race, out of which the selection committee approved the name of ‘Gondhal’.
33 films were included in the race, 14 Hindi films were also in the race.
This year, a total of 33 films from different languages across the country were sent to FFI to contend for Oscars. Of these, maximum 14 films were in Hindi language.
Apart from this, 4 films each from Marathi, Telugu and Gujarati languages, 3 films from Tamil and 1 film each from Malayalam and Nagami languages were included.
The list of 33 Indian films includes 14 Hindi films Haq, 120 Bahadur, Tera Mera Naata, Main Wapsar Aaung, Oh My Dog, Border 2, Khunta, Dhurandhar, Dhurandhar The Revenge, Governor, 2020 Delhi, Ikkis, Obsession and Hanuman Ansh. Despite the strong claim of Hindi and other regional languages, Marathi film ‘Gondhal’ was successful in winning.
Gondhal is a psychological thriller film
This Marathi film with a runtime of 2 hours is a psychological thriller based on the folk tradition and religious ritual ‘Gondhal’ of rural Maharashtra. This film has been written and directed by Santosh Davkhar.
The story of the film revolves around a night-long Gondhal ritual held at the home of newly married couple Anand and Suman. During pujas and festivals, old disputes, personal rivalries and political tensions that have been buried among the village people start coming out.

The village Patil’s son Sarjerao, who was angry at not being able to marry Suman, is unable to accept the marriage and gradually this sacred ritual turns into a crime and suspense drama. The film stars Kishore Kadam, Ishita Deshmukh, Yogesh Sohani, Nishad Bhoir and Suresh Vishwakarma in lead roles.
The film is based on the folk tradition and religious ritual ‘Gondhal’ of rural Maharashtra.
The music of this film has been composed by great composer Ilaiyaraaja. For this making, director Santosh Dawkhar has also received the Silver Peacock (Best Director) award at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI).

13 member jury panel decided
A special jury was constituted by the Film Federation of India to select the film. This jury panel included stalwarts like P Seshadri, Vijay Patkar, Hitu Kanodia, Shanti Kumar, Sandeep Parashar, Sanjay Patil, Sabu Joseph, Anil Thomas, Vivek Vaswani, Bijon Dasgupta, Haasan, Vasan and Tannishtha Chatterjee.
The jury members, after thoroughly reviewing all the entries, decided to send this Marathi thriller to the Oscars 2027 stage.

Last year, the film Homebound was sent by India for the Oscars. The film starred Ishaan Khattar and Vishal Jethwa in lead roles.
A total of 24 films from different languages were considered for India’s Oscar entry in 2025. Homebound was selected among these. At that time, selection committee chairperson N Chandra had said that this decision was very difficult.
N Chandra had said, “These were films which touched people’s lives.” Directed by Neeraj Ghaywan, Homebound was based on Basharat Peer’s 2020 New York Times article ‘Taking Amrit Home’.

In the 98th Oscar Awards (2026), ‘One Battle After Another’ won maximum 6 awards including Best Film.
