Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman became emotional at an event organized to mark the 110th birth anniversary of legendary Carnatic singer MS Subbulakshmi in Bengaluru on Tuesday. He presented some of Subbulakshmi’s compositions in the programme. Music lovers at the function remembered Subbulakshmi and her contribution to Indian classical music. A biopic film will soon be released on Subbulakshmi’s life. MS Subbulakshmi was born on 16 September 1916 in Madurai. She was among the most respected singers of India. In 1998 he was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour. A biopic film on Subbulakshmi’s life will come soon. Rashmika Mandanna will play his character in the film. The official launch of the film took place on 16 September 2026, on his 110th birth anniversary, at The Music Academy, Chennai. Gautham Tinnanuri is directing the film, who has previously made films like ‘Jersey’ and ‘Kingdom’. Before Rashmika, Sai Pallavi’s name had come up for this biopic. For the first time, Rashmika will play the role of a historical and cultural figure whose identity is primarily associated with Carnatic classical music. Know how M.S.Subbulakshmi became the country’s greatest singer? M.S. Subbulakshmi alias Kunjamma was born on 16 September 1916 in Madurai (Tamil Nadu). His mother Shanmukavadir Ammal was part of the Devadasi community who played the veena and his father Subramaniam Iyer was a singer. His mother got him trained from the famous Pt. Narayan Rao Vyas and at the age of just 10, he made his first recording. Subbulakshmi used to sing bhajans while accompanying her mother during her stage performances. Her first performance took place on the stage of Madras Music Academy in 1929, when she was just 13 years old. In an interview given to The Wire, Subbulakshmi had told that one day she was sitting outside the house making a mud house when someone picked her up and took her straight to her mother on the stage. Mother was performing in front of about 50-100 people and she wanted Subbulakshmi to also sing a few songs. When he wiped his hands soiled with mud and started singing, the music academy erupted in applause. After this he started being given opportunities to sing continuously. The famous journalist of that time, T. Sathasivam, wrote a front page article in the Tamil weekly magazine Ananda Vikatam after this performance of Subbulakshmi in 1936, after which huge crowds started attending her concerts. After meeting in connection with work, both of them started liking each other and got married against the family. Sadasivam knew that Subbulakshmi’s talent was not limited to the stage only. Filmmaker K. On the recommendation of Subramaniam, Sadasivam got Subbulakshmi the lead role in the film Sevasadan. This 1938 film was a huge hit and Subbulakshmi emerged as a big name in the South. To make Subbulakshmi’s songs reach the general public, husband Sadasivam decided to make films by investing his own money. On Subbulakshmi’s suggestion, Sadasivam made the first film Meera (1945) on Mirabai. Subbulakshmi was given the lead role of Mirabai in the film. To play the role of Meera, Subbulakshmi herself visited all the places where Meera had spent time in devotion to Krishna. Shooting of the film began in 1944 at Newton Studios, Madras, after which the team visited Jaipur, Vrindavan, Chittor and Dwarka. Impressed by the concept of the film, the Maharaja of Udaipur helped in every way, including permission to use his palace for making the film with elephants and horses. With the help of the Maharaja’s minister, he got royal elephants and horses and also permission to shoot anywhere in the palace at any time. Royal dancers from the palace were also provided for the shooting. Many of the extras seen in the film were also royal people. Subbulakshmi had 20 songs in the 136-minute film. The film Meera was released on Diwali on 3 November 1945. This 136-minute film had 20 songs, which were sung by Subbulakshmi herself. This film was such a big hit at the box office that after two years some scenes were reshot and re-released in Hindi with the name Mirabai in 1947. Mountbatten, Rajendra Prasad, Indira Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru attended the premiere. On 21 November 1947, the film Mirabai was released, due to which Subbulakshmi became a national star from a Tamil star. While introducing Subbulakshmi in the film, Sarojini Naidu named her Nightingale of India. The then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru also attended the premiere of the film. Apart from these, there were other big personalities of the country like Lord Mountbatten, Rajendra Prasad, Vijayalakshmi Pandit and Indira Gandhi. After watching the film, Jawaharlal Nehru and Mountbatten became fans of Subbulakshmi. The film Meera proved to be a cult musical in Tamil cinema. This film is still included in the list of 100 greatest films of India. After Meera became a hit, she got many film offers, but she broke her ties with films forever. Jawaharlal Nehru had said – I am an ordinary Prime Minister in front of you. According to The Print, Subbulakshmi got a chance to sing in front of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru at the Karnataka Festival held in Delhi in 1953. This time Jawaharlal Nehru could not stop himself from praising him. He went to Subbulakshmi and said – Your voice has the power to shake the strings of hearts, what am I in front of you, just an ordinary Prime Minister. Gandhiji was also a fan, he used to sit in front and request for songs. While working together in the freedom struggle, Mahatma Gandhi and Subbulakshmi became friends. Gandhiji liked her voice so much that he many times requested Subbulakshmi to sit in front and recite Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram. On 2 October 1947, Mahatma Gandhi organized a program for Subbulakshmi in Delhi. Actually, Gandhiji wanted to hear his hymn ‘Hari Tum Haro’ in the voice of Subbulakshmi. Subbulakshmi was not able to sing it properly, so she suggested that the song be given to another singer, but this suggestion was rejected. Due to some reason Subbulakshmi could not attend the programme. Subbulakshmi wanted an apology, for this she tried till midnight of 1st October to record Hari Tum Haro and sent the recording to Mahatma Gandhi by the morning flight. Bhajan was not sung for several months after Gandhiji’s assassination. When Subbulakshmi heard the news of Gandhiji’s assassination on January 30, 1948, she fainted. He was so shocked that he did not sing the hymn Hari Tum Haro for several months.
