Just before the festival and wedding season, Bureau of Indian Standards i.e. BIS has increased the hallmarking fees on gold jewelery and artwork. Now jewelers will have to pay ₹75 per article instead of ₹45.
This change has come into effect under the BIS (Hallmarking) Amendment Rules, 2026. However, this fee increase does not at all mean that customers will have to pay an additional fee of ₹ 30 on every gold jewellery.
Gold hallmarking fees increased by ₹30
As per the new rules, jewelers depositing gold articles at recognized Assaying and Hallmarking Centers (AHCs) will now have to pay ₹75 per article.
- Minimum fee per consignment: The minimum fee per consignment will remain at ₹200.
- Rate of increase: Hallmarking fee per article has increased by ₹ 30 i.e. about 67%.
- No change in silver rules: Hallmarking fees for silver articles has been kept constant at ₹35 per article. The minimum consignment charge for this is fixed at ₹ 150.
Will ₹30 directly impact the pockets of buyers?
The simple and straightforward answer is – No, it is not necessary.
- Price will depend on jewellers: A fee of ₹75 is paid by the jewelers to the hallmarking centres. There is no order in the notification to recover this amount directly from the buyers.
- Cost Accounting: Jewelers can either bear this additional cost of ₹30 themselves or add it to the making charges and overall pricing of the jewellery.
- Mathematics of Consignment Size: Minimum consignment fee is ₹200. If a jeweler sends only one piece at a time for hallmarking, he will have to pay a minimum fee of ₹200 instead of ₹75.
BIS’s share from AHCs
It has also been decided in the notification how much amount will be given to BIS by the hallmarking centres.
- Sleep: ₹7.50 per article (minimum ₹20 per consignment).
- Silver: ₹3.50 per article (minimum ₹15 per consignment).
Applicable taxes will be added separately.
What does Hallmark indicate and how to check authenticity?
According to BIS, the main purpose of hallmarking is to provide third-party assurance to buyers of the purity of gold or silver.
While buying gold jewellery, customers must look for 3 main identifying signs…
- BIS Standard Mark
- purity or fineness (e.g. 22K916)
- 6-digit HUID number
Currently BIS allows hallmarking of gold jewelery in 6 grades – 14K (585), 18K (750), 20K (833), 22K (916), 23K (958) and 24KS (995).
With the help of HUID number, buyers can check the purity details themselves through app or system without depending on any shop.
What is HUID number?
Hallmark Unique Identification i.e. HUID is a 6-digit alphanumeric code. This gives every gold jewelry a unique identity.
By entering this code on ‘BIS CARE App’, customers can know which jeweler the jewelery belongs to, at which center it has been hallmarked and what is its actual purity.
