The Manchester roof continues to leak. After a humiliating home defeat to 10-man Manchester City over the weekend, Manchester United now look set to lose one of their most promising academy talents, JJ Gabriel. The 15-year-old, nicknamed ‘Kid Messi’ and called ‘generational’ by Ryan Gibbs, has reportedly informed the club that he wants to leave Old Trafford and become a free agent.

The news has sent shockwaves through the United hierarchy and is set to raise questions about the running of the academy. Though Gabriel is not immediately set to join another club, the best in the world would be in a race for his signature. Barcelona and Premier League rivals, Arsenal, who have a recent history of giving pathways to talents like Max Dowman, Myles Lewis-Skelly, and Ethan Nwaneri, are expected to be circling around.

Who is JJ Gabriel?

Gabriel, born Joseph Junior Andreou O’Cearuill in October 2010, is a 15-year-old forward who is highly rated primarily because of his exceptional footwork, quick changes of direction, and ability to comfortably carry the ball at high speeds, all of which look beyond his years. He joined United at the age of 11.

In April 2025, at just 14, he became the youngest player to ever feature for Manchester United’s Under-18s, instantly making his mark by scoring twice on his debut against Leeds United. He was later named the 2025–26 U18 Premier League Player of the Season. The teenager reached another major milestone in August 2026 when he made his first unofficial senior appearance for the club in a pre-season friendly.

He has been regularly training with the club, and was said to have been close to a debut in Wednesday’s League Cup tie against Brighton.

Why does he want to leave Manchester United?

Reports in the English media say there has been a breakdown in the relationship between Gabriel’s family and the club, leading to the decision not to continue. United can still convince them to stay and turn it around but even the news is likely to leave a significant mark on the club.
