Mbappé’s ‘dictator’ tag stems from a viral internet meme that portrays him as an authoritarian figure wielding supreme control over his teams. The jokes gained traction during his time at Paris Saint-Germain, when his contract renewals and alleged influence over sporting decisions fuelled the perception that he was running the club.

The joke escalated when Mbappé’s legal team threatened an influencer over a satirical kebab sandwich named after him. Fans then took the meme further, using Photoshop and AI to depict him in military uniforms and compare him with historical figures such as Mao Zedong and Congolese dictator Mobutu Sese Seko.

“Part of it is funny because you can tell that for some people, it is all in good fun. And part of it is a little less funny because we know the damage people like that have caused throughout history,” Mbappe said while speaking in an interview with the French football federation.

“So being compared to people who murder people, who have made millions and millions of people miserable, I don’t think I have ever done that in my life. So there is a mix of things where you think to yourself: ‘I know it’s meant in a light-hearted way’,” Mbappé said.

“And so it does not go that far, but it sometimes showcases that there is a lack, a lack of awareness, sometimes political, sometimes human, among people,” Mbappé added.
