You will be able to make payment by tapping your phone like an ATM card: New tap and pay feature launched in UPI, system will work even without internet

Now you will be able to make UPI payments from your phone without scanning the QR code and entering the PIN. For this you have to tap your phone on the swap machine like an ATM and credit card. With this, up to Rs 5,000 can be sent at one time. National Payments Corporation of India on Friday launched two new features to make UPI payments easier. One is the ‘UPI Tap and Pay’ facility for smartphones with NFC support and the other is the AI powered ‘My UPI’ control platform. These were rolled out by RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra during the ongoing Global Fintech Fest 2026 in Mumbai. This is how UPI Tap and Pay will work. Till now, to make UPI payment, the user had to scan the QR code, enter the amount and then enter the PIN. All this will not have to be done in the new tap and pay technology. If you have an NFC supporting phone, you will be able to make payments by simply touching or tapping your phone at the merchant’s PoS machine. However, this feature will work only on supported POS machines. PIN will have to be entered on transactions of more than ₹ 5,000. For payments of ₹ 5,000 or less, UPI PIN will not be required, but to transfer amounts more than this, it will be mandatory for the user to enter the UPI PIN on the POS machine screen or on their phone app.
