Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Thursday said the Election Commission has recognized TVK as a registered political party.
The party has received recognition in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. EC has also confirmed ‘CT’ election symbol to TVK. The party had contested the elections on this symbol.
Vijay said that TVK got 35% votes in the recent 2026 assembly elections. He described it as an ‘unprecedented miracle’ in Tamil Nadu politics.
He said his government will work for honest and corruption-free administration while respecting the electoral mandate.

Promise of public service and welfare schemes
Vijay promised to honor the trust of the voters through continued public service and welfare schemes across the state.
He emphasized the ideological direction of the secular social justice alliance. Vijay said the party contested the recent assembly elections 27 months after Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam was formally launched.

Earlier TVK was not a recognized party
When a new party is formed, it does not have to be immediately “recognized” to contest elections. The Election Commission has a list of vacant election symbols, which is called ‘Free Symbol’.
If the new party fields its candidates in a fixed number of seats (5% of the total seats in the state), the Election Commission gives it one of the vacant symbols (such as CT) only for that election, so that all its candidates can contest on the same symbol.
When a party performs well in elections and wins the required number of votes and seats, the Commission gives it official “recognition”. After this, the election symbol becomes reserved forever and no one else can use it.

TVK does not have majority in the assembly
The results of Tamil Nadu assembly elections were declared on 4 May 2026. In this, TVK had got 108 seats. However, it fell short of the figure of 118 required to form the government.
The party formed an alliance with Congress, VCK and IUML after the elections. After 59 years, the Congress has two representatives in the cabinet led by Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, while the IUML and VCK have one representative each.
The Left parties, which won two seats each, had decided to provide ‘outside support’ to the TVK. They are not part of the government.
