The iconic Gaiety Galaxy Theater in Bandra, Mumbai was closed by the police on Monday. Hanuman Ansh was shown in the theatre, but before the show the audience started creating ruckus due to burning of cable wire. The posters of Mirzapur in the same theater were also torn. After the arrival of the police, when the documents were checked, irregularities related to the license came to light. Hanuman Ansh was being shown on Monday. Some political workers had come to watch the film, but the show could not start due to the cable being burnt. The people who reached there created a ruckus in protest when the film did not start. After an argument escalated with the staff present there, he allegedly tore the posters of Mirzapur: The Movie. Police were called when the situation worsened. Police investigation has revealed that the license of the theater has expired in 2021-22 itself. The license has not been renewed since then. After this, due to non-compliance of rules, the theater management was instructed to close the premises and stop the show. Bandra Police has registered a case against the theater owner, manager and the cinema running company under section 223 of the Indian Justice Code (BNS). 12 notices have been pasted outside the theater. 12 notices have been pasted outside the walls of the theater. So we ordered the management to shut it down immediately,” a senior police officer told Mid-Day. Another officer said, “Entertainment license is necessary for running every theatre. This license is issued from the Mumbai Police Headquarters located near Crawford Market in Fort. The license of Gaiety-Galaxy was not renewed from 2021-22.” Theater owner Manoj Desai said – news related to license is fake. Theater owner and executive director Manoj Desai, while talking to Hindustan Times, has denied the claims of not renewing the license. He has said that the theater will be closed due to technical improvements. According to him, some cables inside the theater were burnt. To replace these, new cables have been procured from Lohar Chawl in South Mumbai. The management says that the shows will be started again as soon as the problem is fixed. Gaiety-Galaxy was started in 1972. Gaiety-Galaxy, one of the most recognized theaters of Mumbai, was started in 1972. Initially there were three screens, Getty, Galaxy and Gemini. Later four more screens, Glamour, Gem, Gossip and Grace, were added. By combining these seven screens, this complex became famous by the name of G7. Gatti-Galaxy has a special identity among the single screen and mass audience theaters of Mumbai. Estimated loss of Rs 17-18 lakh per day from 7 screens. Trade analyst Girish Wankhede assessed the possible loss of the theatre. He told that there are about 7 screens in Gatti-Galaxy. On an average, a show can earn Rs 1 to 1.5 lakh from one screen. The theater’s share in this is around Rs 50 thousand. According to Wankhede, there can be a loss of about Rs 2.5 lakh on each screen in a day. According to 7 screens, this loss can reach around Rs 17 to 18 lakh per day. He said that if the theater remains closed for 7 days, the loss could exceed Rs 1 crore. According to him, this closure has happened at a time of the week when mass-oriented films like Toxic and Mirzapur: The Movie are running. Girish Wankhede said Gaiety is among the theaters where over-the-top potboilers and mass films get good crowds. Therefore, theater owners are facing loss of an important business period. The first film was ‘Sita Aur Geeta’. The first film in Gatti-Galaxy was Ramesh Sippy’s ‘Sita Aur Geeta’ released. It was started on 24 November 1972. In that era, single screen theaters were the biggest measure of the popularity of films and Gaiety-Galaxy soon made its own identity in Mumbai. Sholay tickets were sold in black here. Prakash Mehra had made the film Zanjeer with Amitabh Bachchan, which was called a flop. Everyone said that this film would flop. The film was finally released on 11 May 1973. The film could not do anything special in Mumbai. Amitabh was so angry after knowing this that he got high fever. He decided to leave acting and return to Allahabad (now Prayagraj). After 4 days, director Prakash Mehra left for some work. As soon as his car passed outside Mumbai’s iconic Gaiety Galaxy, he saw a fight for tickets taking place amidst the crowd of people. When we went closer, we came to know that his film Zanjeer was being shown here. All the shows are housefull and people are buying Rs 5 tickets in black for Rs 100. He immediately called Amitabh Bachchan and informed him about this. Hearing this, his health deteriorated further.
