The 57th GST Council meeting, earlier scheduled for September 12, has been postponed to October 7 due to the BRICS summit being hosted by India in New Delhi, PTI reported, citing sources. The BRICS summit is scheduled for September 12-13 and is expected to discuss key global issues, including the economic fallout of the West Asia crisis.

According to the sources cited by PTIthe GST Council meeting will be preceded by a meeting of government officials on October 5 and 6.

The council, chaired by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and comprising finance ministers from the states and Union Territories, will meet after more than a year. Its previous, 56th meeting was held on September 3-4, 2025, when the Centre and states approved a major overhaul of the GST rate structure.

The revised GST regime, which came into effect on September 22, 2025, introduced a two-tier tax structure of 5 per cent and 18 per cent, along with a 40 per cent rate for select ultra-luxury and sin goods. It replaced the earlier four-tier structure of 5 per cent, 12 per cent, 18 per cent and 28 per cent that had been in place since the introduction of GST on July 1, 2017.

At its October 7 meeting, the GST Council is expected to consider measures to simplify GST registration for businesses that pass on tax credits exceeding Rs 2.5 lakh per month, according to PTI.

The council is also likely to examine automation and other proposed changes in the process for cancellation of GST registrations.

Currently, the procedures followed by central GST formations and different state authorities for registering large businesses that pass on more than Rs 2.5 lakh in monthly tax credit are not uniform. This has led to uncertainty for taxpayers, sources said, according to PTI.

The GST Council had approved a simplified registration mechanism for small and low-risk businesses at its September 2025 meeting. The system was subsequently rolled out from November 1.

Under the simplified scheme, businesses identified as small and low-risk through GST system data analysis, as well as applicants who self-assess their monthly output tax liability at no more than Rs 2.5 lakh — including CGST, SGST/UTGST and IGST — can opt for the facility. There are currently around 1.68 crore businesses registered under the GST regime.
