Some people brought the raw materials required for making drugs from abroad, while some were accused of being involved in its manufacturing, storage and supply.

During the investigation, more than 750 kg of synthetic drugs and the materials used to make them were recovered. According to officials, two residential flats were allegedly being used as a place to prepare drugs.

28 accused, 12 given death sentence

There are a total of 28 accused in this case. Cairo court has sentenced 12 accused including Sara Khalifa to death. At the same time, nine accused were given life imprisonment. Seven accused were acquitted by the court, while two other accused are said to be absconding.

The prosecution had also charged the accused with manufacturing and smuggling of synthetic drugs and possessing unlicensed arms and ammunition.

Who is Sara Khalifa?

39-year-old Sara Khalifa is known as a TV presenter and media personality in Egypt. She has been associated with a program named ‘Mission Impossible’. Matters related to security and crime were discussed in this programme.

Apart from TV, Sara Khalifa is also said to have a business related to cosmetic surgery clinic and programs. social media But he also has a big presence. There are said to be around 25 lakh followers on his Instagram account.

The arrest took place in April 2025

Sara Khalifa was arrested in Cairo in April 2025. After this the investigation proceeded against him and 27 other accused. The prosecution presented statements of 20 witnesses in the court. Apart from this, digital and technical evidence including conversations, photographs and videos were also made part of the case.

Sara Khalifa denied the allegations

Sara Khalifa has denied the allegations against her. He declared himself innocent in the court. During the hearing, he reportedly said that he saw drugs for the first time when his photograph was taken in the office of anti-narcotics officials.

Even during the sentencing he claimed his innocence. He said that he has never smoked a cigarette in his life and he is innocent.

What will happen now after death penalty?

In Egypt, it is part of the legal process for the court to seek the opinion of the country’s Grand Mufti in death penalty cases. However, this opinion is not binding on the court.

Grand Mufti’s opinion was also taken in the case of Sara Khalifa, after which the court gave its verdict. However, being sentenced to death does not mean that he will be hanged immediately. The accused have the right to appeal against the decision.

Sara Khalifa and other death row defendants may approach Egypt’s highest appellate court, the Court of Cassation. Therefore, further legal process will be important in this matter.

Five years imprisonment in another case also

Sara Khalifa and some other accused have also been sentenced to five years in jail on charges related to the kidnapping and assault of a youth in a separate case.
