Deepak Kumar Mishra, director of TVF’s popular web series ‘Panchayat’, is now bringing ‘The One: Force of the Forest’ on the big screen. The story of the film is related to Indian folklore, faith and culture. Its idea came from the story of about 400 years old Van Devi Temple in Bihar. Arunabh Kumar has produced it with Ekta Kapoor and written the story with Anandeshwar Dwivedi. Sidharth Malhotra, Tamannaah Bhatia, Manish Paul and Sunil Grover will be seen in the film. While talking to Dainik Bhaskar, Arunabh and Deepak shared the idea of the film, the shooting that lasted for 35-40 nights, the hard work of the artists and interesting anecdotes related to the story. Arunabh told that his tongue got cut once while writing the story, after which he stopped eating non-veg while working on the film. Question: First of all, tell us about the idea of the film. Is it inspired by any folklore or true incident? Answer/Arunabh Kumar: There are two basic sources of this story. The first credit I would like to give to Ekta Kapoor. We often go to the temple together. On the occasion of New Year on January 1, we go to Siddhivinayak Temple. Also visited Mukteshwar temple on Mahashivratri. During these visits we started talking about stories related to temples. Ekta told me some amazing stories related to Mahalakshmi Temple and Mukteshwar Temple. After this I told them that there are many such temples in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, which have very interesting stories behind them. Then we realized that almost every temple in Indian culture has some amazing story behind it. Question: How did you have a personal connection with this story and how did you decide to make the film? Answer/Arunabh Kumar: The second source is my mother. She used to take me to different temples of Goddess and Shakti during Durga Puja. We used to worship there, offer sarees and visit the temple for many days. During this time, she took me to Van Devi Temple located in Bihta, about 35 kilometers from Patna. This is about 400 years old temple. It is believed that a person named Vaidyanath Mishra had established it in the 16th century. At that time the people there were troubled by the mysterious elements related to the forest. To escape from them, he prayed to ten forms of Durga and one of them was established there as the forest goddess. I was very impressed by this story. I narrated this story to Deepak and then to Ekta. He also liked this story very much. Ekta said that such a big and amazing story should be brought on the big screen. He felt that this story demanded a larger canvas. The film started from here. Question: Deepak ji, what was your reaction when you heard this story for the first time? Answer/Deepak Kumar Mishra: I was very excited. This kind of folk tale has not been shown on the big screen before in Hindi cinema. I found this very new. Although the story is a folk tale, its story is related to today’s society. When we go to such a temple, many questions come to our mind – is it true? Why did this happen? How were such beliefs formed? This curiosity drew me towards this story. Question: When you reached the set, what was the first picture of the film in your mind? Answer/Deepak Kumar Mishra: We started from the part of the story where the story starts from Mumbai. My first attempt was to make this story seem like the story of a completely normal person in the beginning. As the story progresses, his real world gradually opens up and different dimensions get added to it. When I was shooting in Mumbai, the picture of the film was different in my mind. When we reached the village and the forest area, the picture changed completely. Every location and every day brought with it a new challenge. Our effort was to give complete justice to the story as per its requirement. Question: Was there any such experience related to this film, when you guys got completely immersed in the story? Answer/Arunabh Kumar: Yes, it is a very funny incident. I told this story to Deepak for the first time in Goa. While writing the story, once I ate non-veg and at the same time my tongue got cut. After this I decided in my mind that I will not eat non-veg as long as I work on this story. Gradually the matter progressed so much that I became a vegetarian. This may sound strange to you, but when you are completely immersed in a story, such things start happening. Many times it happens that while writing a love story, you start remembering your old love. When you write a story on parents, you remember your parents. Similarly, we also gradually got immersed in this story. Question: Deepak ji, what happened to you during the shooting of this film that will always be remembered? Answer/Deepak Kumar Mishra: We shot continuously for about 35-40 nights. The entire team was in such a state that it became difficult to sleep at night even after the shoot was over. Night is a character in itself in this story. We shot action and acting scenes continuously at night. Even after shooting till 6 in the morning, the actors worked with full energy. The best part was that the entire team was so engrossed in the story that no one realized that we were staying awake for so many nights. Question: How hard did the actors work for the film? Answer/Deepak Kumar Mishra: All the artists worked very hard. Siddharth and Tamanna were very serious about their scenes. They repeatedly asked how it could be improved. He was also very conscious about cultural authenticity. Tamanna used to say many times that if the world of the story is so authentic then it should be shown in the same way. Siddharth has worked hard on action also. The characters of Manish Paul and Sunil Grover will also be a different experience for the audience. Question: How was the casting of Siddharth and Tamanna? Answer/Arunabh Kumar: We wanted an actor who would initially appear to be from the city and would later fit into the village world. We found Siddharth’s personality right for this. We were supposed to meet for about an hour, but the discussion about the story and character continued for three-four hours. He found the story quite relatable. The way Deepak has worked with him, I think this will be one of Siddharth’s best performances. Tamanna also has not played this kind of character before. We hope that the audience will like the pairing of both. Question: How was the experience of being TVF’s first theatrical film? Answer/Arunabh Kumar: We did not start this film with any plan. First this idea came while telling stories. Ekta liked the story, then we started writing it and slowly the film got made. The relatability that is there in TVF stories will be there in this film too. Also, the audience will get the cinematic experience of the big screen. Many elements like Chhath festival, folklore, jungle and animation make the film different. Question: Which is your web series on which you think a better film can be made? Answer/Arunabh Kumar: I think a film can be made on ‘Tripling’. A film can also be made on ‘Sapne vs Everyone’. If a film has to be made on ‘Panchayat’ then it can be made. Many of our stories can be made into films, but if you asked, these two names came to my mind at the moment. Question: Would you like to give any update regarding season 5 of ‘Panchayat’? Answer/Deepak Kumar Mishra: Season 5 is about to come. I am also waiting for him. I am also excited to see him.
