Four years after a three-storey house collapsed during renovation work in Delhi’s Satya Niketan, killing two labourers and injuring four others, another multi-storey building came crashing down in the same locality.
The latest tragedy unfolded around 1.30 pm on Sunday, when a five-storey building being used as a boys’ paying guest accommodation collapsed in a congested lane near Delhi University’s South Campus.
Six people have died so far, and six others have been rescued from the debris, according to officials. According to reports, repair work was underway in the building when it collapsed.
Ironically, the 2022 incident also took place in the afternoon, at around 1.15 pm, and involved a building undergoing renovation.
What Happened In 2022?
On April 25, 2022, a three-storey house in Satya Niketan collapsed while renovation and alteration work was underway.
The terrace collapsed and trapped six labourers under the debris. Rescue teams from the Delhi Fire Service, Delhi Police and National Disaster Response Force worked for hours to reach them. Two labourers, Naseem, 35, and Bilal, 40, died, while four others were injured, The Indian Express reported.
The narrow lane posed an additional challenge for rescuers. Fire tenders could not enter the lane because of the limited space, forcing emergency teams to work amid the congested surroundings.
Delhi Fire Services had deployed eight fire tenders and around 50 personnel. Firefighters drilled small holes into the concrete slab to provide water to the trapped workers and keep them calm before cutting through the debris to rescue them.
A Building Already Under Civic Scanner
The 2022 building had also come under the civic body’s scanner before it collapsed.
The South Delhi Municipal Corporation said the owner had been served a notice on March 31 over additions or alteration work being carried out at the property. On April 11, police were requested to stop the work.
The SDMC said the house was around 25 years old and that action had been initiated against the property over the alleged unauthorised construction.
An FIR was registered against the contractor and owner under IPC sections 304 (culpable homicide) and 308 (attempt to commit culpable homicide not amounting to murder), according to The Indian Express.
2026: Another Afternoon Collapse In The Same Locality
On September 6, 2026, the same Satya Niketan locality witnessed another building collapse.
This time, the structure was a five-storey building that housed a boys’ PG. It collapsed at around 1.30 pm while repair work was underway in the basement, according to officials.
Locals also alleged that water had accumulated in the basement following heavy rain. The exact cause of the collapse is under investigation.
The collapse again triggered a massive rescue operation involving the Delhi Police, Delhi Fire Service, NDRF and Delhi Disaster Management Authority. Six people were rescued from the debris, while one more person pulled out during the night was declared dead, taking the toll to six.
The Striking Similarities
While the two incidents involved different buildings and occurred four years apart, several details are strikingly similar.
Both collapses took place in Satya Niketan, in the afternoon and at buildings where renovation or repair work was underway.
The 2022 building collapsed at around 1.15 pm; the 2026 structure came down at around 1.30 pm.
Both incidents also unfolded in the locality’s narrow, congested lanes, creating difficulties for rescue teams trying to reach those trapped beneath the rubble.
The series of collapses has turned attention to the densely packed Satya Niketan neighbourhood, where several buildings have been converted into PG accommodations and student hostels because of its proximity to Delhi University’s South Campus.
