Bigg Boss 20 has started from 6th September. Like every year, this time too there have been many contestants in the show, whose lives have been in controversies in some way or the other. The question again arises whether contestants are selected in Bigg Boss house or there is controversy? If we look at the last several seasons, a pattern is clearly visible. The makers bring such faces, some of whom are very popular, some are already discussed on social media and some whose personality, relationships or old disputes can create the ground for conflict inside the house. Or some who need to revive their career or create an identity.
The same formula is visible in Bigg Boss 20 also. 15 contestants entered the house, which include names like Mahhi Vij, Isha Rikhi, Amrapali Dubey, Mary Kom, Kanika Mann, Gullu, Scout, Arshifa Khan and Manoj Tiwari’s daughter Reeti Tiwari.

Most controversial contestants of Bigg Boss 20
Isha Rikhi- Separation from Badshah Isha Rikhi had a secret marriage with singer and rapper Badshah in February. A few weeks later, Isha and her family confirmed the marriage by posting wedding pictures, while Badshah did not confirm it. Soon Isha also started sharing cryptic posts, due to which there were reports of rift. Due to controversies, this week Badshah has announced divorce from Isha Rikhi. He says that the divorce took place with mutual consent. Isha has reached the show just a few days after announcing the divorce.
Mahhi Vij- separation from Jay Bhanushali Mahhi and Jai Bhanushali were a popular couple in the TV industry, although both of them got divorced in 2026. Mahi has given clarification on marriage and personal disputes many times through vlogs. Both have been in a lot of discussion and controversies this year.
Amrapali- Rumor of relationship with Nirahua
Amrapali’s name has been linked with rumors of a relationship with Nirahua (Dinesh Lal Yadav) for a long time. Apart from this, there was also a rumor about her religious conversion regarding her hijab video, which was said to be related to the film.
Mary Kom- personal life controversy
The personal life of Olympic medalist and six-time world champion Mary Kom has been in the headlines for some time. Mary Kom and her husband Karung Onler Kom got divorced with mutual consent in December 2023. Initially, both of them did not reveal the reason for divorce, however, in an interview given to PTI in January 2026, she claimed that she had to suffer financial loss from her husband. She alleged that Onler took loans in her name, transferred her properties to his name and misused her earnings.
Arshifa Khan- Controversy over Danish Zehen’s death
In December 2018, 21-year-old Danish Jehan died in a road accident. He was a part of MTV Ace of Space. After his death, Arshifa shared a very emotional post on social media and described herself as his close friend. It was claimed on social media that she was his girlfriend. However, Arshifa’s mother rejected this claim. The controversy escalated further when Danish’s brother Gufran accused Arshifa of gaining publicity regarding his brother’s death.
Taking these allegations seriously, Arshifa accused Gufran of harassing her and her family and tarnishing her image. Arshifa also remains in the news for her controversial and bold statements, which can also benefit Bigg Boss 20.
Gullu-Splitsvilla controversy Gullu is already a well-known face after winning Roadies Double Cross and Splitsvilla 16. Her old relationship with Preet Singh in Splitsvilla had created a lot of discussion. He has also been in the headlines for fights in these shows.

It has been seen in all the previous seasons that due to the fear of being voted out in the show, the contestants stay in each other’s good books and do not indulge in fights. But this year, to change this tradition, a major change has been made in the format. This year the theme of the show has been kept as Tahastu, that is, every contestant will get 2 lives. There were reports of bringing Riya Ahir, who came into limelight by stopping the van during the Cockroach Janata Party protest, in the show. This was beneficial in the promotion of the show. Voting was also conducted to include Riya in the show. Riya reached the stage in the premiere, but while announcing the decision of the public, she said that due to less votes, she will not go to the show.
What happened in the last season i.e. Bigg Boss 19?
Controversies in Bigg Boss 19 also remained one of the biggest USPs of the show. The makers put different types of personalities together and within no time relationships, fights, allegations and social media debates started in the house.
Tanya Mittal was the biggest example of this. In the show, she used to call herself ‘Ma’am’ or ‘Boss’ and remained in the news due to the claims made about her lifestyle and alleged 150 bodyguards. The media counted her among the most talked about faces of the season.

Rajat Dalal was one of the most talked about faces in Bigg Boss 18. His social media fan following was huge. His aggressive behavior inside the house also became a constant topic of discussion.

In the story of a reality show, it is often necessary to have a character with whom the audience is angry. Faces like Tanya Mittal and Farhana Bhatt played this role in Bigg Boss 19. Whether the audience agreed with her behavior or not, she definitely became a topic of discussion.
Many times, the contestant with whom the audience is most angry gets the most screen time.
3. Creating a story of ‘good vs bad’
Makers don’t just want a group of good people. They want personality clash. Clash is often seen in the show between calm people and aggressive people.
