Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Pathirage capped a brilliant season with Diamond League final glory, overcoming tricky conditions to claim the title with an 89.04m effort.

Glasgow Commonwealth Games gold medallist Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage continued his brilliant run this season with the Diamond League final title on Saturday, September 6, after he threw 89.04m in his third attempt in Brussels, becoming the first Sri Lankan athlete to win a Diamond League final.

Making his debut at the prestigious season-ending event, Pathirage produced a winning throw of 89.04m in the third round at King Baudouin Stadium. After a quiet start, Pathirage found his mark when it mattered most, with the effort proving enough to bag the title.

Pathirage came off a brilliant outing at the Zurich Diamond League, where he threw 92.07m in a record-breaking effort.

“I am truly very happy about that. Coming from a small country like Sri Lanka, winning a major meet like this,” Pathirage said after the event.

The Sri Lankan opened the competition with throws of 80.42m and 79.73m, well short of the distances he had produced throughout the season. Trinidad and Tobago’s former Olympic champion Keshorn Walcott took the lead with 83.99m, before Poland’s David Wegner unleashed a massive personal best of 87.47m in the third round to move into first place.

Pathirage responded later in the same round, producing an 89.04m effort that restored him to the top of the standings and proved decisive. He followed it with throws of 85.96m and 85.76m before fouling his final attempt.

“Honestly, I could not get a big throw today because the weather conditions were quite difficult; it was very cold… so that is why I couldn’t reach a big distance,” Pathirage said.

Wegner finished runner-up with his personal-best throw of 87.47m, while Walcott completed the podium with a season-best 83.99m. Grenada’s two-time world champion Anderson Peters finished fourth with 83.70m.

Peters closed the gap on Walcott with his fifth-round throw, but the Trinidad and Tobago thrower held on to third place by just 29cm.
