Indian Army will now use only Made-in-India bullets. Adani Defense and Aerospace and Indo-Russian Rifles (IRRPL) have signed a deal for 5 years today on Saturday.
Under this, Adani Defense will manufacture and supply 7.62mm size bullets for the AK-203 assault rifles of the Indian Army.
The biggest advantage of this agreement will be that the army will no longer have to depend on any other country for bullets and will continue to get cartridges in India.
Company formed after India-Russia agreement
IRRPL was established in 2019 following an inter-governmental agreement between India and Russia. Its purpose is to make AK-203 assault rifle for the Indian Armed Forces.
The rifle manufacturing unit of the company is in Korwa in Amethi district of Uttar Pradesh. Its joint venture includes Indian companies Advanced Weapons and Equipment India Limited and Munitions India Limited.
Russian concerns Kalashnikov and Rosoboronexport are also part of the joint venture.
Agreement to make 6,01,427 AK-203 rifles
The Defense Ministry has given the responsibility of production of AK-203 rifles in India to IRRPL. In December 2021, the government had given a contract to the company to manufacture 6,01,427 AK-203 rifles at the Korwa unit.
According to the company, the new ammunition agreement will further strengthen the program’s domestic production network. Under this, the AK-203 rifle made in India and the ammunition manufactured in the country will be part of the same supply network.
Adani Defense also has a unit in Kanpur
Adani Defense has created the capability to manufacture small caliber ammunition in India. Its unit of Kanpur is also included in this.
According to the company, the new agreement will help in increasing the domestic capacity of the entire supply chain related to small arms in the country. This will also give a boost to the government’s Self-reliant India initiative to increase self-reliance in defense production.
Efforts to reduce dependence on foreign supplies
This agreement will further increase the level of local production in the India-Russia defense programme. The program initially focused on manufacturing the AK-203 rifle in India.
Now ammunition made in the country has also been included in it. This will reduce dependence on foreign suppliers for an essential part of the weapon system.
The company said that this agreement has come at a time when India is expanding its domestic defense production base and trying to reduce dependence on foreign supply chains.
According to the company, the supply of both the rifle and its ammunition from India will further increase the level of local production in the AK-203 programme.
