In Semaria village of Durg district of Chhattisgarh, the bad road condition during the rainy season has become a big problem for the villagers. The situation is such that when someone dies here, even taking the body to the cremation ground becomes a challenge. Recently, during the last journey of 28-year-old youth Balram Markam, about 30-40 villagers had to shoulder the bier. The villagers reached the cremation ground carrying the dead bodies through waist-deep water and swamp-like roads. During this time, many people slipped, while some were left behind due to difficulties in rural roads.
A video of this entire incident has surfaced, in which villagers are seen carrying the bier through a road filled with rain water and mud. There is also a drain on the way, where the water level had increased significantly. The villagers had to go to the cremation ground through this drain.
According to the villagers, the road of about four kilometers from Bagdumar of Ahiwara assembly constituency to the dependent village Semaria becomes very bad during the rainy season. There are big potholes at many places on the road, after filling with water the entire road turns into mud and swamp. The condition of the road of about one and a half kilometer from the village to the cremation ground is also very bad.
Villagers say that even on normal days, movement through this route is difficult, but the situation becomes worse during the rains. Especially when someone dies, people have to face a lot of trouble in taking the dead body to the cremation ground.
‘Instead of four people, 20-30 people have to shoulder the responsibility’
While talking to Aaj Tak, Asha Nishad, a resident of Semaria, said that she has been living in the village for the last 12 years and there has been no change in the condition of the road in all these years. He said that when someone dies during the rainy season, it becomes very difficult to carry the dead body and there is a danger of the coffin falling.
Asha Nishad told that recently people were saved from slipping while carrying a dead body. He said that while normally six people should carry the bier, due to the bad road, 20-30 people have to carry it. He demanded the government to build the road.
Sarpanch said – every year the situation is the same during rains.
Sarpanch of Bagdumar-Semaria Damani Sahu said that the condition of the road leading to Mukti Dham is very bad and every year the villagers have to go through the same problem during the rainy season. He said that people became aware of this problem after the video went viral.
According to the Sarpanch, a large number of people of tribal community live in the village and it is also said that the village has been adopted by President Draupadi Murmu. He said that the public representatives have been informed about the problems of the village and the Collector has also been informed about it. He says that understanding the pain of the village, the road should be constructed.
Collector said- proposal has been sent for the road
Durg Collector Abhijeet Singh said that the proposal for road construction has already been sent to the government. He said that instructions have been given to the Engineer of Rural Road Scheme to conduct a survey for the road leading to the crematorium. After the survey, a proposal will soon be sent to include the road in the network of the scheme.
Semaria village is about 30 kilometers from Durg district headquarters and about 20 kilometers from Bhilai Steel Plant. It is a dependent village of Bagdumar Gram Panchayat under Dhamdha District Panchayat of Ahiwara Assembly Constituency. The bad condition of the roads during the rainy season has made the daily life as well as the last journey of the villagers difficult.
