Premier League clubs have smashed the record for spending in a single transfer window for a second successive season, with Manchester City’s £125 million (₹1,596 crore) signing of Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea taking the total summer outlay close to £3.5 billion (₹4.47 lakh crore).

A frantic final two days before the window closed at 2200 GMT on Tuesday pushed spending well beyond last season’s record of £3.14 billion (₹4.01 lakh crore). More than half of the clubs in the English top flight also broke their individual transfer records, with several deals exceeding £100 million (₹1,276.8 crore).

Fernandez’s move to City matched the British record fee Liverpool paid for forward Alexander Isak 12 months ago. The Argentina midfielder will join a revamped City midfield alongside Elliot Anderson, who arrived from Nottingham Forest for £116 million (₹1,481.1 crore).

City also signed Senegal forward Iliman Ndiaye from Everton for £65 million (₹830 crore), taking their summer spending beyond £450 million (₹5,745.6 crore). The club are undergoing a major rebuild following Pep Guardiola’s departure, with Rodri, Bernardo Silva and John Stones among the notable exits.

“At Manchester City, we are always looking to bring in world-class players and Enzo fits the bill,” director of football Hugo Viana said. “He is a complete midfielder — technically gifted, hardworking, tenacious and a goalscorer.”

Fernandez added: “Every player wants to be part of a club like this.”

Chelsea, Liverpool also spend heavily

Chelsea continued their rebuild under new manager Xabi Alonso, making England forward Morgan Rogers their marquee signing after paying Aston Villa £117 million (₹1,494.6 crore). Maxence Lacroix, Emiliano Martinez, Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck were among their other arrivals.

Premier League champions Arsenal were quieter on deadline day after their pursuit of Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez collapsed. The Gunners had already strengthened with Bruno Guimaraes and Ezri Konsa earlier in the window.

Liverpool, meanwhile, signed France winger Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain for a fee that could rise to £124 million (₹1,583.2 crore). Their attempts to sign Crystal Palace’s Ismaila Sarr and Brighton’s Yankuba Minteh were unsuccessful, while Cody Gakpo remained at Anfield despite interest from City and Tottenham.

Tottenham have spent more than £300 million (₹3,830.4 crore) after finishing just above the relegation zone last season, signing Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes and Omar Marmoush.

Despite the spending, Spurs have lost their opening two league matches without scoring, while Aston Villa have also undergone a significant overhaul after losing several key players.
