Amidst the ongoing speculations about Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s IPL future, once again a big update has come out. According to former Chennai Super Kings batsman Subramaniam Badrinath, Dhoni has made it clear that if he plays further in the IPL, he will not accept the role of Impact Player. That means instead of coming on the field just to bat, Mahi wants to play the entire match as a wicketkeeper.
Actually, the option of Impact Player was considered very important for 45 year old Dhoni. Amidst the challenges related to increasing age and fitness, with the help of this rule, he could save himself from the burden of 20 overs of wicketkeeping and could come on the field to bat when needed. But Dhoni’s thinking is something different.
Badrinath told on his YouTube channel that Dhoni has personally told him that he will not play as an impact player. He believes that if he plays, he will play the role of a full-time wicketkeeper and will be on the field for the entire 20 overs.
‘CSK will benefit if he becomes an impact player’
Badrinath believes that in the current situation the role of Impact Player can prove to be perfect for Dhoni. He said that staying in the field for a long time has an impact on Dhoni’s body and coach Stephen Fleming has also mentioned this.
According to Badrinath, Dhoni now usually comes to bat in the last part of the innings and in such a situation, his use as an impact player can be strategically beneficial for CSK. With this, the team will continue to benefit from Dhoni’s experience and finishing ability, while the burden on his body will be reduced.
Then how will Mahi play in 2027?
This now raises the biggest question regarding Dhoni playing IPL 2027. If Mahi does not want to become an impact player and wants to remain on the field for the entire 20 overs as a wicketkeeper, then his fitness will be the most important factor.
Dhoni left the captaincy of CSK before the 2024 season and after this his batting role has also been more limited than before. However, his experience and ability to finish matches under pressure is still very important for the team.
Dhoni has given five IPL titles to CSK. Now the question is not whether he will play as an Impact Player or not…he has made his position clear on this. The real question is, will Mahi’s body allow him to remain on the field as a wicketkeeper for another full IPL season?
This decision will decide whether Dhoni will once again be seen in the yellow jersey in 2027 or not.
