The water level of river Ganga is rising rapidly in Varanasi. After crossing the warning point, the water is now moving towards the danger mark. Due to this increase happening at the rate of about one centimeter per hour, the people of the coastal areas are quite worried.

The situation is such that instead of four shoulders, the dead bodies are being taken with the help of boats to the rooftops of the buildings located at Manikarnika Ghat, where they are being cremated.
Due to filling of water on the ghats, now the people coming with the funeral procession have to take the help of boats. People coming for the last rites have to wade through knee-deep water, debris and mud. People have to bear double the expenses for this work.
Many people including the funeral procession Abhishek Srivastava have demanded that this holy place should be properly cleaned and the path to reach the crematorium should be made easy.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi reviewed the situation
Varanasi MP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to District Magistrate Satyendra Kumar on phone regarding the flood situation in the district. He took stock of the water level of the river and the arrangements made in the relief camps. PM Modi directed the officials to provide immediate assistance to the affected people.
He said that special care should be taken of the needs of children, women and elderly people living in the camps. Wherever additional relief material is needed, it should be supplied immediately.
