Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday pressed for dialogue and diplomacy as he called for early settlement of global conflicts, including the wars in Ukraine and Iran.

PM Modi made the remarks at a joint press conference alongside Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever in New Delhi. The Belgian Premier landed in India earlier today, embarking on his three-day State visit to the country.

“Be it Ukraine or West Asia, we support all efforts for the early end of conflicts and for peace”, PM Modi said as he reiterated India’s long-standing doctrine on global conflicts.

His remarks come at a crucial time when the world is bearing the brunt of three major conflicts: the Russia-Ukraine war, the Israel-Gaza war, and the US-Iran war.

Most recently, the conflict with Iran has thrown global economies into turmoil, with the blockade of the critical Strait of Hormuz disrupting energy markets and trade flows.

The conflict began on February 28, when the US and Israel launched coordinated strikes on targets across Iran. Tehran retaliated by launching attacks on US-linked military facilities across the Gulf before blocking the crucial Strait of Hormuz.

India has, time and again, maintained that the war between Washington and Tehran must be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy.

PM Modi Met Iran’s President

Earlier this month, Prime Minister Modi met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, where the two leaders discussed bilateral ties, trade and the current situation in West Asia.

In a post on ‘X’, PM Modi wrote: “Met President Masoud Pezeshkian in Bishkek. Reiterated our commitment to strengthening India’s long standing friendship with Iran across diverse sectors. We want to expand and diversify our trade basket in the times to come.”

“We had a discussion on the prevailing situation in the region. India will continue to support all efforts aimed at ensuring lasting peace”, he wrote.
