At the end of 2025, the Dutch central bank reported 612.4 metric tonnes of gold, valued at around €72.2 billion, or approximately $83.6 billion at current exchange rates. The bank says relocating part of those reserves improves both their accessibility and storage capacity. The underlying logic is straightforward: while the Netherlands hopes it will never need to deploy its gold during a crisis, having reserves positioned where they can be accessed quickly could strengthen the country’s financial resilience when markets are under severe stress.Some Gold Was Physically Moved To The Netherlands: Not all of the relocated gold was sent to London. The Dutch central bank said more than 27 metric tonnes of gold were physically moved from the US and Canada to the Netherlands and placed in a highly secure vault at a military facility near the town of Zeist in the central Netherlands. The bank has not disclosed how the gold was transported across the Atlantic, citing security considerations. It also said an equivalent amount of gold was moved from the secure Dutch facility to London as part of the wider relocation.Not All The Gold Was Physically Transported: The rest of the relocation was carried out through market transactions rather than physical transportation. The Dutch central bank sold around 59 metric tonnes of gold in New York and used the proceeds to purchase an equivalent amount in London. This reduced its holdings in North America while increasing the amount held in the UK without requiring all the gold to be physically shipped across the Atlantic. The strategy also gives the Netherlands greater access to London, one of the world’s most active gold-trading centres, potentially allowing its reserves to be sold or used in financial transactions more quickly when needed.Why Does London Matter? London’s importance comes from its role as a major global centre for gold trading. The Dutch central bank says gold stored through the Bank of England meets international trading standards, making it readily tradable in global markets. That means London can offer DNB greater flexibility if it needs to sell gold quickly or use its reserves for other financial purposes during an emergency. By holding more gold in a market with deep liquidity and established trading infrastructure, the Netherlands believes it can access its reserves more efficiently when it matters most.Why Is Gold Important During A Crisis?
