A case of an attempt to dupe people with an AI deepfake video created using the identity of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has come to light.
Investigation of this video confirmed that it was made with AI. CB-CID of Tamil Nadu Police has registered a case on September 1 and started investigation.
In the video, a person looking like Vijay was talking to people in Hindi asking them to contact a WhatsApp number for financial help.
An attempt was made to cheat people by spreading this fake video on many social media platforms including Facebook.
Investigation has revealed the possibility of some fake videos and social media accounts being operated from Pakistan.
Investigation found not just one but many deepfake videos
Initial investigation by CB-CID has found several AI deepfake videos claiming financial help in the name of Vijay. These were being shared on different social media platforms.
CB-CID has contacted Facebook’s parent company Meta for investigation. Police has asked for information about fake accounts and logs related to video uploads.
The investigation is to find out who made the video, who uploaded it and which accounts and numbers were used to spread it.
Police have asked social media platforms to remove these videos and stop their spread. The cyber team is busy identifying the accused.
Police appeal- do not contact on numbers
Tamil Nadu Police has appealed to the people not to contact the phone numbers given in such videos nor join the WhatsApp groups mentioned.
Police clarified that these videos claiming financial help from the Chief Minister are fake AI deepfakes. People have been appealed to ignore them and also caution their family and relatives.
