Two women from West Bengal, aged 26 and 28, were allegedly trafficked to Delhi on the promise of employment and later forced into prostitution at an alleged brothel on GB Road, police said on Monday. They were rescued during a raid on August 26.
Three women, aged 55, 58 and 29, who allegedly worked as caretakers at the brothel have been arrested. The alleged owner of the premises is absconding, police said.
Police are also trying to locate the eight-year-old son of the 28-year-old woman. He was allegedly taken away by the syndicate and used to threaten her, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Rohit Rajbir Singh said.
Women Were Brought From Bengal
All five women involved in the case — the two rescued women and the three arrested caretakers — are from West Bengal. A police officer aware of the matter said this suggested that the alleged racket was primarily active in trapping women in the state before bringing them to Delhi.
The women were allegedly lured on different pretexts and sold to brothels on GB Road, where they were forced into prostitution, the officer said.
The first case came to light after a 60-year-old woman approached the women police post at Kamla Market on August 26. She told police that her 26-year-old daughter, who is a mother of three, had been missing from West Bengal since May 2.
The woman had contacted her mother on August 25 and sought help, saying she was confined at Kotha No. 58 on GB Road.
Woman Were Lured At Railway Station
DCP Singh said the 26-year-old woman told police that she was at a railway station in West Bengal on May 2 when a man named Kalu, aged around 30, allegedly approached her with an offer to arrange employment in Delhi.
“He allegedly took her mobile phone and later sold her to the 55-year-old caretaker of brothel number 58,” DCP Singh said.
The caretaker allegedly kept the woman at her residence for around a month before taking her to the brothel. She was then allegedly handed over to the owner, who forced her into prostitution, police said.
The money earned by the woman was allegedly kept by the owner and another caretaker.
8-Year-Old Son Used To Threaten Woman
During the raid, police also rescued a 28-year-old woman from the brothel.
According to her statement, around two years ago she left home with her eight-year-old son after a quarrel with her husband and mother-in-law in West Bengal.
While travelling towards Sealdah railway station, an unidentified woman allegedly gained her confidence by offering food and drinks to her son. She then took the woman and child to her house, claiming she wanted to help them.
The woman and her son were subsequently brought to Delhi and taken to the residence of the 55-year-old caretaker. They were later taken to the brothel, the DCP said.
The 28-year-old woman was initially asked to sweep and mop the premises but was later allegedly forced into prostitution.
“She alleged that her son was taken to a hostel by another caretaker. She was threatened that her son would be killed if she refused to comply,” Singh said.
According to police, she was allowed to meet her son only once every three or four months. The money she earned was allegedly retained by two women at the kotha. Police are now trying to trace the child.
Cases registered under BNS, ITP Act
Both rescued women underwent medical examinations at Lok Nayak Hospital and were provided counselling. Their statements were also recorded.
Two separate cases were registered at Kamla Market police station under sections 137 (kidnapping), 143 (trafficking of a person), 144 (exploitation of a trafficked person), 64 (rape), 61 (criminal conspiracy) and 3 (common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Sections 3, 5 and 6 of the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act were also added. These cover keeping a brothel or allowing premises to be used as one, procuring, inducing or taking a woman or girl for prostitution, and detaining a woman or girl at premises where prostitution is carried out.
“While the two women were arrested in the case relating to the 26-year-old victim, the two along with the third caretaker were arrested in the other victim’s case,” Singh said.
Police also recovered Rs 55,000 in cash and other incriminating evidence from the alleged brothel, he added.
