The first meeting under the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement between Pakistan, Turkey and Saudi Arabia will be held in Istanbul on Monday. The meeting will be attended by the foreign and defense ministers of the three countries along with military chiefs. On behalf of Pakistan, Deputy Prime Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar, Defense Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif and Army Chief and Chief of Defense Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir will participate. Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkey had signed a joint defense agreement in Mecca on August 7. Under the agreement, an attack on any one country will be considered an attack on all three countries. Amidst the increasing tension in West Asia, this agreement is being considered an important step towards strengthening security cooperation between the three countries. The agenda of the meeting is not clear at the moment. The agenda of the first meeting of the Strategic Political and Defense Committee formed under the Mecca Defense Agreement has not been made public, but regional security, situation related to Iran, defense cooperation and mutual security strategy are likely to be discussed. Apart from this, consideration can also be given to strengthening mutual coordination to deal with the increasing tension and possible security threats in the region. Bangladesh also showed interest and there is a possibility of other countries joining in the future under the Mecca Agreement. Bangladesh has already shown interest in this agreement. According to Pakistan’s Foreign Office, its participation in the Istanbul meeting reflects its commitment to lasting peace and stability in the region with strong ties with Turkey and Saudi Arabia. Under this agreement, the military power of Pakistan-Saudi-Turkey will come together and the different strengths of the three countries will come together. There will also be a separate meeting of the four countries. Apart from the Mecca Defense Agreement meeting, a separate meeting of the foreign ministers of Turkey, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Egypt is also proposed. This group of four countries was formed in March with the aim of increasing coordination on issues related to regional security and stability. The last meeting of this group was held on August 5 in Amman, the capital of Jordan. During that time the leaders had emphasized on further strengthening dialogue and mutual cooperation to maintain regional peace, security and stability. All three countries are facing challenges. The Mecca Defense Agreement has taken place at a time when all three countries are facing their own security challenges. The increasing tension between Israel and Iran is affecting the entire West Asia. Pakistan has an ongoing border dispute with Afghanistan, while Saudi Arabia remains at risk of attacks by Houthi rebels. At the same time, Turkey has been waging a campaign against Kurdish militant groups for a long time and its relations with Israel are also tense. In such a situation, the three countries have signed this agreement to increase security and defense cooperation.
