Within a moment I heard the sound of death. After the horrific devastation in Rasuwagadhi in Nepal, Om Dwivedi of Indore has shared his ordeal. Om has recently returned from Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. Just two days before the accident, he had passed through the same route, where debris and water are now showing a scene of devastation. Om told that the route through which his team passed, the hotel where they spent the night, the restaurant where they had food and the immigration center where they completed the investigation process, the same places were turned into debris and water after the accident. As soon as he heard the news of the accident, he got goosebumps. See the pictures first… Felt the danger, but had no idea of the devastation. Om has also shared the pictures taken with his companions during the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra on social media. In these, the team members are seen at different places during the journey. According to Om Dwivedi, on August 12, a group of 20 Indian travelers and 4 Nepali members had left from Kathmandu for Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. The team reached Rasuwagadhi at around 7 pm. Here Nepali guide Pemba Sherpa told the travelers that the mountains ahead are sinking and it is difficult for vehicles to pass through. Om told that he had felt the danger at that time, but had no idea how dire the situation could be. Small stones were falling from many places and vehicular movement was closed on the road. He told that the passengers were worried, but the journey had to go ahead. The group got down from the vehicle and crossed that stretch on foot and reached the border. The next day the team completed the immigration process in both Nepal and China and left for Tibet. After this, reached Mansarovar via Kerung and Saga. After circumambulating 52 kilometers and reaching 21 thousand feet, the team took bath and darshan after reaching Mansarovar. After this, the 52 kilometer long circumambulation of Kailash was started. During this time the team reached a height of about 21 and a half thousand feet. Om told that during the journey he also saw Gaurikund, Rakshas Tal and Ashtapada. According to him, the 52 kilometer parikrama was completed with great joy. Visiting Gaurikund at an altitude of about 21,500 feet on the peak of the Himalayas was a very special experience for him. When they returned, the same path had become the path of death. According to Om, after completing the circumambulation of Kailash, the team returned to Rasuwagadhi in Nepal via Kerung. The area seen here two days ago was now unrecognizable. While going on the path only small stones were seen falling. While returning there, huge mountains had collapsed and fallen. A part of the road was submerged in the river and it became very difficult to proceed further. Guide Pemba Sherpa warned the team that staying in this area was not without danger. There were two ways – stay or risk your life and leave. According to Om, at that time the team had two options. Either take the risk and cross the dangerous area or stay there and wait for the situation to become normal. Pemba told the passengers to either come out risking their lives or wait here. They feared that the mountains might collapse at any time. If the entire mountain falls down then everyone can go into the Trishuli river. The team decided to take the risk. The passengers crossed the dangerous route on foot and reached the vehicle parked ahead. After this somehow we could reach Kathmandu. A stone had already given him the feeling of death. The danger of Rasuwagadhi did not come to light for Om at the time of his return. During the journey too, a moment came which he has not been able to forget till date. For him, that was the moment when he realized for the first time how close death could be. ‘The news of the devastation in the same area just two days later made that incident more horrifying.’ Om told that he got the news of the accident in the morning. As soon as he heard the news, the first thing he remembered were the places where his group had stayed and the places through which it had passed. The hotel where they stayed, the restaurant where they ate. The entire area of the immigration center where the investigation was conducted was now reduced to water and debris. Till two days ago, where there was movement of passengers, local people were engaged in daily work and there was hustle and bustle in shops and restaurants, the sudden devastation shocked them to the core. Om says that after getting information about the accident, he also started worrying about the local Nepali people who helped him during the journey. During the journey, he kept remembering the Nepali people who inquired about his well-being, provided food and cooperated with the passengers. Om says that somehow they came out safely, but many people had reached there with their faith, belief and dreams. This journey to Kailash Mansarovar is no longer just a memory of darshan and 52 kilometer parikrama for Om. The experience of seeing death from close range in Rasuwagadhi and seeing the same road turn into a deluge just two days later has become one of the most horrifying memories of his life.
