Given Nepal’s high vulnerability to natural disasters such as landslides and flash floods, what’s the specific institutional bottleneck in emergency search and rescue operations that Nepal Police is working to address under your leadership?

Recently, we have experienced a lot of vulnerabilitiesincluding earthquakes, floods, flash floods, landslides, etc., as well as fires and forest fires. So, in those conditions, we have established institutions within Nepal Police and also with our sister security organisations. We have recently established the Disaster Rescue Training Center. However, there is certainly a need to train our officers, including in rescue during flash floods, avalanches, fires and fire rescue, and also flood rescue.

How is Nepal Police adapting its operational framework to safeguard critical infrastructure and streamline security for long-term reconstruction efforts?

Yes. So, Nepal Police has preparedwithin its capacity, officers to be able to respond to all these crisis situations through training and exposure and through rigorous exercises. However, we need more equipment and devices, and also more exposure, because we are much more vulnerable in terms of earthquakes, much more vulnerable in the world also.

So, what are your specific expectations from Indian security and disaster management agencies regarding joint training, technical equipment, and border regions?

Nepal and India probably share the same kind of problems. And while there could be training exercises in the coming days, we need a lot of equipment to respond to such crisis situations. We probably need assistance from our friendly countries, neighbouring countries—the assistance of equipment and the early warning system. We need to develop this within our neighbours and the institutions within ourselves. So whenever there is a threat of disaster, the early warning system can help the other institutions and neighbouring countries with their prior preparedness and enable them to respond well in advance.
