25 year old Sheikh Abdul Hafiz becomes emotional remembering his father. It is alleged that BJP workers, enraged by showing the condition of the government school in the village, beat up Abdul and his father Sheikh Mohammad Mafeeq. Mafiq died on 15 August due to serious injuries.

So far 11 people have been arrested in the case. Abdul Kokrose is a member of the Janata Party (CJP) and lives in Karishunda village in Bankura district of West Bengal. The accused are also from this village. There is an atmosphere of fear in the village after the incident. The houses of most of the accused are locked and their families have left the village.

What condition is Abdul’s family in now? What is the condition of the government school in the village from which the dispute started? And what does BJP have to say on the allegations? To know this, Dainik Bhaskar’s team reached Abdul’s village at Ground Zero.

First of all talk about Abdul

After the incident, on August 17, CJP leader Ashutosh Ranka also reached the village to meet Abdul. Abdul’s village Karishunda falls in Bankura district, about 150 km from Kolkata.

There is no road to reach Abdul’s house in the village. The road is full of mud. Such conditions remain here throughout the rainy season. As soon as we reached the village, the first thing we saw was a heavy police force.

Police deployed for security at Abdul’s house

Two male policemen and one female policeman have also been deployed outside Abdul’s house. Due to security reasons, one is not allowed to go to Abdul’s house without entry and permission from the police. Abdul has his mother and 21-year-old sister in his house, apart from this, 12 CJP workers who arrived from Delhi are also staying.

Mother hugged children at the mention of father

The family members call Abdul by the name Reek. Abdul lived with his father, mother and sister in a two-room house without plaster. Sister went out for job this year. After his father’s departure, Abdul and his mother now live in the house.

Abdul’s mother embraces both the children at the mention of their father. Both the children become emotional, but the mother does not let her emotions show on her face. Father used to deliver wholesale goods to shops, his income was the only way to run the house. Abdul does not currently have any employment. However, he stayed in Kolkata for some time and worked as a delivery boy.

Abdul said- fighting while returning from Jantar Mantar

“I have been associated with the CJP movement since the beginning. I also went to Jantar Mantar in Delhi. Was there till July 26. Returned home by train on July 27. After this, some people of the village started getting angry with me.”

“I was assaulted for the first time on July 28. BJP workers surrounded me and started pushing me. They asked why I had gone to Delhi. After this they started breaking my scooter and threatened to kill me.”

“The people of the village intervened and calmed down the matter. After this, my old phone was snatched away. I had many important evidences in it. I had also gone to Indus Police Station with the complaint of first assault, but the police did not take the matter seriously. The people who attacked my family on August 13 were the same people who had assaulted me earlier.”

Enraged after showing the condition of the school

Abdul tells that due to the ‘Fix the School’ movement, he reached his old primary school on the morning of 13 August. Here permission was sought from Kashinath Dey, in-charge of teachers, to show the problems of the school. He asked for Abdul’s name and address.

Abdul alleges;-

The same day at 8 pm, BJP goons came to the house. The lights were cut off and they started slapping, kicking and punching me in the dark. A man came with a sharp blade, but I was saved in the darkness. Papa was also beaten very badly. We escaped and called the police but they did not agree even before the police.

Abdul further explains that the father had suffered serious injuries. The accused also beat up the father in the hospital. Threatened to kill in front of the police. Then on August 14, between 10-11 am, three goons came to the house and started pressurizing for an agreement. They wanted us to come live on Facebook and apologize. But we refused to bow down.

Abdul said- The school was repaired, painted

Abdul alleges that after the incident, painting and repair work was done hastily in the Government Primary School of Karishunda. New paint and plaster marks were seen on the walls of the school, located about 200 meters away from Abdul’s house.

Villagers and children also told that the work has been done recently. However, teacher Anand Mandal claimed that the repairs were done 8-10 months ago. The school has 6 rooms, 2 toilets and smart class monitor. According to in-charge teacher Kashinath Dey, Abdul and his sister studied in this school.

Bankura DM Anil Das Gupta said that there is no major complaint regarding the government school of the village. There are about 150 children and 4 teachers in the school. There are already two toilets, while work on another toilet for girls is underway. Smart classrooms are also being built in the school.

CJP workers stayed at Abdul’s house, the houses of the accused were locked.

Apart from the policemen, about 12 CJP workers are also staying at Abdul’s house. These include Junaid, who brought food for the protesters at Jantar Mantar.

FIR has been registered against 5 people in the case of Sheikh Mohammad Mafeeq’s death. These include Sheikh Azad, Shrikant Majhi, Rohit Majhi, Ashtam Majhi and Prashant Majhi (Ruidas). Apart from this, the FIR also mentions 8 to 10 other unidentified people, who are accused of breaking into the house and attacking.

So far the police have arrested 11 people. We reached the house of Sheikh Azad and Pintu Majhi. Locks were hanging on both their houses. Neighbors told that his family had left the village around August 17.

Karishunda village comes in Indus assembly. From 2021, the MLA here is Nirmal Dhara of BJP. When he came to the village for the 2025 assembly elections. So accused Sheikh Azad and Prashant Majhi were included in his welcome and BJP program. Apart from this, the remaining accused MLAs are said to be close to Nirmal Dhara.

However, Nirmal has not given any statement since the incident. We have called and messaged to talk to them, but no response has been received yet.
