The Central Government has taken a big step to control the rising prices of onion in the country. The government will sell onions at a subsidized rate of ₹35 per kg in the national capital Delhi. This is approximately 36% less than the current average retail price. To provide this relief, ‘Kanda Express’ is reaching Delhi on Wednesday with the first consignment of 800 tonnes of onion. Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Khare said on Tuesday that this onion will be sold to the general public in Delhi through Nafed, NCCF and Kendriya Bhandar stores. Onions are being sent by train to four big centers also. Nidhi Khare informed on social media that not only Delhi, but also to four other big centers of the country – Chennai, Ernakulam, Madurai and Guwahati, onions are being sent in bulk through railways. The onion being sent to these cities has been taken out from the government buffer stock kept in Nashik, Maharashtra. The aim of the government is to immediately stop the rising prices in these major consumer centres. Onion became expensive by 28% in one month and 56% in a year. According to government data, the average retail price of onion across the country has increased by more than 28% in the last one month. Onion, which was available at ₹34.80 per kg on July 25, reached ₹44.72 per kg on August 25. At the same time, exactly a year ago i.e. on August 25, this price was ₹ 28.67 per kg, compared to which this year there has been a huge jump of 56% in the prices.
