Delhi’s Directorate of Education on Tuesday issued a precautionary advisory to all government, government-aided and recognised private schools amid the rising concern over seasonal flu and H1N1 (swine flu) in the capital.
The advisory, issued under the Directorate’s School Branch (Health) as part of its “Healthy School-Healthy Community” initiative, asks schools to increase awareness among students and staff and take preventive measures to reduce the risk of infection.
The Education Directorate has, however, said there is no need for panic, stressing that timely awareness and precaution are important.
These Flu Symptoms Should Be Watched
According to the advisory, schools should remain alert to symptoms that may be associated with seasonal flu or H1N1.
These include sore throat, cough, breathing difficultybody ache, headache, fatigue, chills and fever.
Schools have been asked to make students and staff aware of these symptoms and encourage them to take appropriate precautions.
What Delhi Schools Have Been Asked To Do
The Directorate has issued several guidelines to schools to limit the spread of respiratory infections.
Students and staff should be encouraged to cover their nose and mouth while coughing or sneezing and dispose of used tissues properly.
Schools have also been asked to promote regular handwashing with soap and water, particularly before eating and after coughing or sneezing.
Students and staff have been advised to maintain an appropriate distance from people showing symptoms of respiratory illness. Masks may be used where necessary, the advisory said.
Schools have also been instructed to ensure regular cleaning of classrooms, common areas and frequently touched surfaces.
Wherever possible, schools should maintain adequate ventilation. They have also been asked to spread awareness against spitting in schools and public places.
Water, Rest And Hygiene Also In Focus
The advisory asks schools to encourage students to follow healthy habits, including drinking adequate water, eating nutritious food, getting enough rest and maintaining personal hygiene.
Students and staff have also been advised to avoid repeatedly touching their eyes, nose and mouth.
The Education Directorate has specifically cautioned against self-medication, advising students and staff not to take antibiotics or other medicines without medical advice.
Awareness Drive To Extend Beyond Classrooms
The Directorate has asked schools to ensure that information about flu prevention reaches students and parents beyond regular classroom activities.
Schools have been asked to use morning assemblies, classroom interactions, notice boards, communication with parents and digital platforms to spread awareness about prevention and precautions.
Compliance Report Due By August 31
The Directorate has directed district and zonal Deputy Directors of Education to monitor implementation of the guidelines in schools.
A consolidated compliance report from all districts has to be submitted by August 31, 2026, according to the advisory.
The Directorate’s message to schools is that early awareness and simple preventive measures can help prevent a larger health problem.
