Sri Lanka spinner Prabath Jayasuriya has become the third player to be sanctioned for an incident during the second ICC World Test Championship contest against India in Colombo.
Jayasuriya was officially reprimanded by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Tuesday after being found guilty of a Level 1 breach of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel. The incident occurred on the second day of the Test on Monday.
The offence falls under Article 2.2 of the code, which relates to the inappropriate use or abuse of cricket equipment, clothing, ground equipment or fixtures during an international match.
Jayasuriya’s frustration boiled over at the end of the day’s play after he was dismissed off the final delivery by India’s Manav Suthar. As he walked back towards the pavilion, the Sri Lankan left-arm spinner struck the boundary wedges with his bat.
The incident earned Jayasuriya an official reprimand and one demerit point. It was his first offence under the ICC Code of Conduct in the past 24 months.
Jayasuriya admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by Andy Pycroft of the ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees. As he accepted both the charge and the punishment, no formal hearing was required.
The charge was brought by on-field umpires Ahsan Raza and Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid, with third umpire Rod Tucker and fourth official Prageeth Rambukwella also involved in the process.
Jayasuriya is now the third player from the Colombo Test to be sanctioned by the ICC. Earlier, India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sri Lankan pacer Asitha Fernando were fined 25 per cent of their match fees and handed one demerit point each for their altercation on the opening day.
The confrontation took place in the 17th over of India’s first innings after Fernando dismissed Jaiswal. The India batter walked towards the Sri Lankan pacer and the two exchanged words before Fernando moved his head towards Jaiswal. Jaiswal then leaned in, resulting in their heads making contact.
Level 1 offences are the least serious category under the ICC Code of Conduct. Depending on the circumstances, a player can receive an official reprimand, a fine of up to 50 per cent of the match fee and one or two demerit points.
In Jayasuriya’s case, the ICC opted for an official reprimand and one demerit point.
Meanwhile, India remain firmly in control of the second Test after declaring their first innings at 503. Centuries from Devdutt Padikkal and Dhruv Jurel helped the visitors post a commanding total before they struck early with the ball, leaving Sri Lanka seven wickets down.
