Challenge of spin in front of Gill
Despite the victory in Galle, the Indian team will be waiting for a big innings from its captain Shubman Gill. Gill has scored two centuries in his last six innings and overall he seems to be in good form. But his one weakness against spin has consistently come to the fore, especially against left-arm traditional spinners.
In the Galle Test, Prabhat Jayasuriya dismissed Gill in both the innings. He returned after scoring 16 runs in the first innings and 8 runs in the second innings. Gill has been out 11 times so far against left-arm spinners in Test cricket.
This is why Gill spent a lot of time against left-arm spin during practice in Colombo on Friday. He faced Manav Suthar, Ravindra Jadeja and some local bowlers and worked on his technique.
However, Gill’s statistics as a captain are excellent. He has scored 1100 runs in 10 tests and his average is more than 73. Before assuming the captaincy, he had 1893 runs in 32 tests and his average was around 35.
Now Gill faces a double challenge. On one hand he has to overcome his weakness against spin, on the other hand he has to win the first overseas Test series under his captaincy. If the bat also works then this phase of his captaincy can be more special.
Big innings expected from Jaiswal

Kuldeep was present in Friday’s net session, but he did not bowl or bat. On the other hand, Saransh Jain bowled to Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill and even troubled Pant on some occasions. However, it would be premature to consider this as a sign of Saransh playing in place of Kuldeep.
