Eight people were killed after a civilian-contracted aircraft crashed at a remote US Air Force facility in Alaska on Thursday, the military said.
The aircraft crashed at the airport serving a long-range radar site at Cape Newenham, in southwestern Alaska, according to the Alaskan Command.
Rescue teams reached the crash site and confirmed that there were no survivors.
The military has not yet said what the aircraft was doing at the radar facility or what the people on board were doing there. The site is used to track aircraft operating in Alaskan airspace.
Investigation Underway
The Alaskan Command has launched an investigation into the crash. Officials said the identities of those killed will be released after their families have been notified.
Alaskan Command chief Lieutenant General Robert Davis described the incident as a devastating loss for the military and the communities it serves.
“These individuals were dedicated professionals carrying out a vital mission in a demanding environment,” Davis said.
Authorities have not yet revealed what caused the aircraft to crash or provided further details about the incident.
