Zomato is testing a new workplace food model in Gurugram, setting up fresh food vending machines at select corporate offices in partnership with food and restaurant brands, according to people familiar with the development.

Called Zomato Now, the initiative is being piloted at a few corporate workplaces, allowing employees to access food from brands and restaurants through the new food pods. A picture of one such setup was shared on LinkedIn by user Daksh Jain.

Zomato Looks To Bring Food Closer To Office-Goers

The workplace pilot gives Zomato a way to explore a segment where employees often rely on office canteens for their meals and snacks.

The idea also raises a larger question for the food-delivery company: whether its platform can become part of the daily workplace food routine, rather than relying only on app-based orders.

For Zomato, the move comes as it continues to build a wider food and convenience ecosystem spanning food delivery, Blinkit, Hyperpure, Bistro and District.

Zomato Now Comes Alongside Blinkit’s Bistro

Zomato Now is being tested alongside sister company Blinkit’s Bistro, its 10-minute food delivery service that operates through its own cloud kitchens.

The company has been cautious about expanding its rapid-food delivery operations. In May last year, Eternal discontinued its second attempt at rapid food delivery and consolidated its 15-minute food delivery experiment under Blinkit’s Bistro vertical.

The development came as Swiggy was expanding its Bolt service, which offers 10-minute food delivery through select restaurant partners and limited menus. Swiggy has since shut down Snacc, a service that operated on a model similar to Bistro.

Bistro Expansion Remains Cautious

Eternal CFO Akshant Goyal said on July 22 that Blinkit was adding around 10 kitchens a quarter for Bistro. He said the company was seeing improvements in throughput at some older kitchens and was working on assortment, menu pricing and operational efficiency.

Goyal also said the company would expand cautiously for now and could accelerate expansion once it became more confident about the business.

Against this backdrop, Zomato Now’s workplace pilot could offer the company another way to understand food consumption habits at offices, including what employees order, how frequently they buy food and what prices they are willing to pay.
