The Manipur government on Wednesday ordered the closure of all schools, colleges and higher educational institutions across the state for three days from August 20, citing the “prevailing law-and-order situation”.
The decision came as protests continued across several valley districts over demands for an update of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) before the Census exercise is carried out in the state.
Protests Spread Across Valley Districts
The Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation (JFD) is observing a 48-hour general strike over its demands. Protesters on Wednesday burnt effigies of politicians, organised rallies and blocked roads in several parts of Imphal and other valley districts.
An order issued by the Education Department said all schools affiliated with the Board of Secondary Education Manipur, Council of Higher Secondary Education Manipur and CBSE, as well as colleges and universities in the government, aided and unaided sectors, would remain closed from August 20 to August 22.
At Khurai Lamlong in Imphal East, protesters burnt effigies of Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh and Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam. Protesters demanded that the Census should not be conducted until internally displaced persons return to their native places.
Dozens of demonstrators also marched for nearly 2 km in Singjamei, Imphal West, while road blockades were reported in Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur and Thoubal districts.
A census training programme for supervisors, enumerators and field trainers was also cancelled in Thoubal, officials said.
CM Reviews Law And Order
The JFD has announced a boycott of government offices from Thursday as part of its ongoing agitation.
Amid the protests, Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh held discussions with senior CRPF officials on the state’s security situation.
CRPF Manipur and Nagaland Sector Inspector General Rajendra Narayan Dash and other senior officers met Singh at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat and briefed him on the prevailing law-and-order situation.
Singh said the CRPF was working with the state government, Manipur Police and other security agencies to address security challenges, counter insurgency and restore peace and public order.
