US President Donald Trump has refused to extend the 60-day deadline for peace talks with Iran. This deadline ended on Monday. The positions of the two countries remain different regarding opening of the Strait of Hormuz, Iran’s nuclear program and permanent peace agreement. The MOU had an option to extend the period of negotiations, but talks had not progressed for several weeks. Iran said- 60 day deadline has no meaning. Iran has also not shown any interest in extending the deadline for talks. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baghai said that no talks had actually begun between the two countries. He said, “We did not even start any talks and America broke the understanding from the very beginning. So the issue of 60 days is not relevant.” Iran says that America did not fulfill its responsibilities under the understanding. For this reason, Tehran does not consider the 60-day period as a real deadline for negotiations. America’s focus is on increasing economic pressure instead of military action. America has not launched any new attack on Iran since the end of July. Now the Trump administration is preparing to weaken Iran economically. US Treasury Secretary Scott Besant has said that new economic steps will be announced against Iran next week. He said that these steps could be among the toughest economic sanctions ever imposed on a country. Simply put, instead of dropping bombs on Iran, America currently wants to get its conditions met by hurting its earnings and business. Strait of Hormuz has also become a big issue in the talks.
