Bangladesh Prime Minister Tariq Rahman’s visit to India has been postponed for the time being. Dhaka’s Foreign Ministry said on Sunday that India should first send back former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Only after this, preparations for PM Rahman’s visit to India will proceed.

The atmosphere deteriorated after Hasina’s press conference.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson in Dhaka Karim specifically mentioned the press conference of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in New Delhi on August 5. He said that Hasina made political statements from Indian soil. This spoiled the environment for travel.
The International Crimes Tribunal of Bangladesh has convicted Hasina of crimes against humanity.
Karim said that Bangladesh has already made its stand clear on this issue. Dhaka wants that the right atmosphere can be created between the two countries before Tariq’s visit.
Dhaka placed 2 demands before India
Bangladesh has placed two major demands before India.
- First demand: India sent Sheikh Hasina and other absconding accused back to Bangladesh under the extradition treaty between the two countries.
- Second demand: The accused in the murder case of Shahid Sharif Usman Hadi should be handed over to Bangladesh.
Karim said that now Dhaka is waiting for India’s reply. However, it was not clear in the press briefing of the Ministry of External Affairs at what stage the talks on the date of the visit are stuck.
PM Rahman’s party against his visit to India
There is also political protest in Bangladesh regarding Tariq Rahman’s visit to India. Leaders of ruling party BNP have raised questions on Sheikh Hasina’s political activities in India.
At the same time, the National Citizen Party (NCP), born out of the movement in 2024, has also opposed Tariq Rehman’s visit to India. The NCP leader said that Tariq Rehman should not go to India until a decision is taken on Sheikh Hasina’s extradition and the new framework of India-Bangladesh relations.
Nahid also alleged that Hasina’s press conference in New Delhi took place with the direct or indirect support of the Indian government. According to him, Hasina’s statement from Delhi cannot be considered merely her personal opinion. This also gives an indication of India’s stance.
India had invited Tariq to come to Delhi
Tariq Rehman has already been invited by India to visit Delhi. When Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla had reached Dhaka for the swearing-in ceremony of Tariq as Prime Minister, he had given this invitation on behalf of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman had recently said that being the current chairman of BIMSTEC (an international organization of Bay of Bengal countries), Tariq has also received an invitation to attend the BRICS summit to be held in New Delhi in September.
Earlier, there were reports of talks between the two countries regarding Tariq’s two-day visit to Delhi in the third week of August. However, even then the final decision on the date had not been taken.
Expectations for the trip had increased after meeting the High Commissioner
Amidst this tension, India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi met Prime Minister Tariq Rahman on August 10. This was his first formal meeting with Tariq after assuming office in Dhaka.
Many important bilateral issues were discussed between the two. During this, Dhaka also expressed hope to complete the extradition process of Sheikh Hasina soon.

After the meeting, Trivedi described the conversation as very good. He said that both the countries are looking forward and have positive thinking regarding bilateral relations.
A few hours later, Trivedi reached New Delhi and met Prime Minister Narendra Modi. After this, expectations had increased regarding Tariq’s visit to Delhi.
