India’s 80th Independence Day 2026 LIVE: India is celebrating its 80th Independence Day on Saturday, August 15, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi leading the national celebrations from the historic Red Fort in New Delhi. The Prime Ministe hoisted the Tricolour at the Red Fort and addresses the nation, marking his 13th consecutive Independence Day speech from the ramparts of the iconic monument.
Ahead of his address, PM Modi extended warm greetings to India and also remembered contributions of many freedom fighters in making India independent.
The celebrations mark 79 years of India’s independence from British rule and will focus on the country’s journey towards a developed India by 2047. For the first time, the National Song ‘Vande Mataram’ is rendered during the celebrations at the Red Fort.

Around 5,000 special guests from diverse backgrounds have been invited to witness the celebrations. The guests include young innovators, My Bharat volunteers, top interns, quiz-winning students, sanitation workers, street vendors and PM Vishwakarma beneficiaries representing traditional crafts.
Technology will also play a major role this year, with real-time AI translation of the Prime Minister’s Independence Day address planned across 22 Indian languages through digital tools such as Bhashini.
5,000 Special Guests Will Attend Independence Day Celebrations At Red Fort
Across the country, the national flag will be hoisted at schools, government and private institutions, residential areas and other public spaces, while cultural programmes will be organised as part of the celebrations.
