The Supreme Court on Monday said it would continue to monitor the investigation into the alleged Ram Mandir donation misappropriation case and directed the Special Investigation Team (SIT) to submit a status report within two weeks.
A bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V. Mohan assured that the probe would be conducted transparently, emphasising that the objective is to ensure a thorough and credible investigation.
The apex court was hearing petitions seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into allegations of embezzlement of donations received for the Ayodhya Ram Mandir, along with a comprehensive audit of the temple trust’s finances.
Ram Temple Theft Case
The controversy over the alleged embezzlement of donations at the Ram temple erupted after Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav alleged massive theft of cash donations and other valuables on June 7.
A Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by the Uttar Pradesh government submitted its preliminary findings on June 23, following which an FIR was registered on June 25 and eight persons associated with the temple’s donation-counting process were arrested.
The investigation has since been expanded, with police recording the statements of several persons, including former Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust general secretary Champat Rai.
